  • 1.  Which MV Platform to use?

    Posted 02-13-2025 10:09

We use mvBase extensively, along with Accuterm (GUI). We need to re-platform to another mv product as mvBase is EOL. We were all ready to go down the OpenQM  route, then Rocket aquirred the product and all development seems to have stopped! ( We have been deliberating the move for some time.) We have  looked at jBase and D3.  Rocket are pushing us down the D3 the path. I don't see many posts about D3 improvements, it all appears to be Universe or Unidata.

So my question is, what would be your platform of choice if you were moving away from your current mv version, or are you happy with your current platform for the foreseeable future (5+ years).

    Many thanks.

    Hi Richard,

Rocket MultiValue has a robust suite of data servers.  We actively maintain all of our data servers.  UniVerse, UniData, and jBASE are considered our progressive data servers and will see enhancements that are innovative and provide industry-based modernization features.

For mvBase I would recommend that you consider upgrading to jBASE or UniVerse.  While D3 will continue to see some enhancements and be maintained with bug fixes there are major enhancements in the latest version of jBASE that provides the ability to upgrade from D3.  This upgrade path lends itself to and upgrade to jBASE from mvBase.

Rocket MultiValue offers a powerful and continuously evolving suite of data servers designed to meet your business needs. We actively maintain all our data servers to ensure reliability, performance, and security.

Our progressive data servers-UniVerse, UniData, and jBASE-are at the forefront of innovation, receiving ongoing enhancements that drive industry-based modernization and deliver cutting-edge features.

If you're using mvBase, we highly recommend considering an upgrade to jBASE or UniVerse. These platforms offer advanced capabilities, improved scalability, and future-proof technology to support your evolving business needs.

For D3 users, while we continue to provide maintenance, bug fixes, and some enhancements, the latest version of jBASE introduces significant advancements that offer a seamless upgrade path from D3. This transition provides a natural opportunity for mvBase users to migrate to jBASE, ensuring long-term sustainability and access to modern features.

Rocket is here to assist you in identifying an upgrade path tailored to your specific needs.

    Hello Chris,

Thanks for your reply.  Is Universe an zero cost upgrade for active mvBase support licenses?

    Hi Richard, how are you?

My advice would be to take the opportunity of the platform migration to modernize as well, transforming your old MV application into an API-driven application with a cutting-edge web front end, to stay competitive for 5+ years.

As for the platform, I can recommend Universe. We've been using it since a long time. It is very robust and scalable, and is fully supported by Rocket MVIS, what is crucial to API and web development.

We have developed a low-code/no-code modernization framework for MV applications, the Aleph MV Framework, that I believe you saw in a demo in its early days some time ago. It has evolved a lot since then, and is have been playing a crucial role in the modernization of our large MV application. This not only preserves the investment in our main asset, but also positions it for future growth and innovation.

I woud be happy to discuss how I can assist you with this challenge. Please feel free to contact me if you are interested.

      Regards,

      Enrique

We use D3 exclusively on Linux and have done so for over 30 years.  Together with Accuterm we have found it to be stable and reliable and provides for all of our needs.   We have roughly 100 or so customer sites who are small retail hardware stores and lumber yards (some are technically challenged) for which D3 does an excellent job.  The minimal care and feeding required allows us to concentrate on application features for our customers.
