Announcements

  • Rocket® Terminal Emulator 10.2.0 (Desktop and Web Edition) now available

The Rocket Software team is pleased to announce that a new version of Rocket® Terminal Emulator (Web and Desktop Edition) is now available.

Rocket® Terminal Emulator provides secure access to IBM Z®, IBM i, and VT applications. The Web Edition is a browser-based emulation for any PC, tablet, or mobile device, whereas the Desktop Edition provides cost-efficient access to terminal-based applications from the desktop. Rocket® Terminal Emulation also runs within the Zowe® framework.

Both Rocket® Terminal Emulator Editions display the latest re-branding that is used by Rocket products like the new logo, header, background, colors fonts, buttons, and icons.

    Rocket® Terminal Emulator (Web Edition)

Security is one of the main motivations for customers to upgrade from legacy software to newer versions or to migrate from Terminal Emulator products from other vendors to Rockets’ latest releases.

With the version 10.2.0 of Rocket® Terminal Emulator (Web Edition) we are introducing new functionalities that improve security:

    ·        Data masking (also called Data redaction) – sensitive data on the screen can be kept secret by showing some standard characters like “XXX” instead of the real data. This can be used to secure data like primary account numbers (PANs), birthdays, Social Security Numbers, or driver license numbers. The masking is based on configurable rules and can be applied to all or selected screens for a defined set of users.

    ·        Additional Multi-factor authentication (MFA) support – with any MFA app that uses the standard time-based one-time password algorithm (TOTP), users can choose their favorite MFA App like Microsoft Authenticator or Google Authenticator.

    ·        Transport Layer Security (TLS) support for VT sessions – all current TLS versions (1.0 to 1.3) are supported when connecting to VT sessions.

Rocket® Terminal Emulator (Web Edition) user experience has been improved with the following new features:

    ·        Session launch improvements – new Terminal Emulator sessions can now be opened in a new tab in Rocket® Terminal Emulator (Web Edition), a new browser tab, and a new browser window, additionally to the session list.

    ·        Printing support for VT sessions – printing is now enabled in VT sessions. The result can be shown in the printing preview function of the browser and printed or stored as PDF or it can be printed as a PCL file with the Rocket® Printer Utility.

    ·        Copy and Paste improvements – the functionalities Copy, Copy and Append, and Paste are added to the right-click menu on the terminal screen.

Administrators can provide predefined scripts to their users that can be launched but not changed by the end users.

The list of all improvements and resolved issues can be found in the Rocket TE Web Edition V10.2.0 release notes (rocketsoftware.com).

    Rocket® Terminal Emulator (Desktop Edition)

With the new user interface that we are introducing in Rocket® Terminal Emulator (Desktop Edition) 10.2.0 we are providing a fresh new look and feel; we are also adding some functionalities that will enhance the user experience.

These are some of the functionalities of the modernized user interface of Rocket® Terminal Emulator (Desktop Edition):

    ·        Redesigned application and connection icons

    ·        New Application logo

    ·        The UI can be customized with light, dark, and color themes. The theme’s main color can be easily adjusted to align with the CI of the customer.

    ·        Open multiple sessions in the same Rocket® Terminal Emulator (Desktop Edition) window, arrange the windows in tabs, tab groups (can be split horizontally or vertically) and pop out windows.

    ·        Select recent session profiles from jump list.

    ·        New command search in the header

    ·        Quick configurations in the new Options bar. Control bars can be docked, floated or automatically hidden.

Surely the new UI is the most visual innovation that the team implemented, but some enhancements were done “under the hood”:

    ·        Portuguese is supported in the UI

    ·        There is an additional layer of security when users are starting Rocket® Terminal Emulator (Desktop Edition) from the Web Deployment Manager: Additional to the authentication on the Website there is an additional authentication required when the Rocket® Terminal Emulator (Desktop Edition) is started. This ensures unauthorized users cannot access the executable file (BZLP).

    ·        When importing BBS scripts, fewer manual steps are required to run them.

    ·        Copy from Excel and paste clipboard data to Excel in BZS scripts is enabled to support customer migrating from Rumba or RMC
