    Hello,

Recently we are looking about Docker to build 'demo' environment of our mv'apps.

Then, is anybody with experience of U2 on container ? Linux or Windows ?

Then, we will to do it with sbxa apps.

I think about one image linux with Uv and one image with sbxaCommMngr

    Client run on host directly.

    All suggestions are welcome.
Rocketeers, please give your Word about it.

    Regards
    Manu

    Manu,

I have run the U2 databases in a container successfully, though a good few years ago I'll admit. I remember having to play with port / firewall settings to get access at the time. So - yes it is possible, though please see Rocket's formal statement on support of virtualisation here https://rbc.rocketsoftware.com/VM.html.

I recall at the time I had  a few issues with the Container being detected as a separate new system each time the Container was started and hence requiring the MV license be re-authorised. At the time this was not an issue for me as I was only using Docker for test systems, but this is worth testing if you are planning 'real world' use to see if you may be affected similarly.

Please note that each VM (whether Docker or any other virtualisation)  image is a separate machine for licensing purposes and each licensed U2 product loaded in a separate Docker instance will require it's own unique license number for that specific instance. For example: if you copy a Docker Container to the same system as the current Container it will still count as a separate system and require a separate unique MV license number for each installed MV product in each Container.

    Regards,

    JJ

We have been contemplating moving our U2 Universe instances onto containers too for a while, and have reached Rocket in the past with little or minimal response.
Licensing is not an issue for us, however managing and maintaining over a couple of hundred instances currently is becoming a challenge. Please let us know if you (or someone else) has a draft playbook on how to move forward.

    Thanks

If you are considering using Automatic Data Encryption (ADE) then please check out the 'retag' option on 'encman' in the event of licensing changes being detected.

And as always I would stress that you should never - ever - lose track or lose control of the Master Key for the current system and as it was at the time any long-term backup was taken,. There are no 'back doors'  in the event it is lost - e.g. when the one person who knew what it was then leaves.

    Hello,

I am working on building out a modernization demo using Docker Containers via Docker compose here at Rocket.  I am working thru the mentioned issues right now (such as licensing, persistence, etc).  This will be a video series with a demo environment to allow you to follow along.  When completed you should be able to take the core docker compose project and modify it to your needs.

    Hi Patrick,
    Good news,.
I hope Rocket plans to push 'UV base image' at Docker Hub (or a reference to a base image) like mySQL or other DBEditor.

I'll follow it with great interest.

    regards.
