We are currently migrating from mvBase to d3/Windows.

According to the online documentation Incremental Backups on d3/Windows are not available, is this still the case?  Are there any plans to implement incremental backups.  We use incrementals on mvBase as part of our daily back up strategy.

Incremental saves on D3 Windows not on the radar. Probably due to the FSI vs. VME file structure and the use of "dirty bits" to tell incremental saves what to save, not sure if the FSI has the dirty bit concept. You might want to consider FSI Hot Backup which is a lot like the mvBase FFR (Fast File Recovery) concept.

Thanks for the reply Brian.  The reason for my question stems from an issue we had with mvBase some years ago. We had a system crash at the end of the day, and realised that nothing had been committed to memory. We had to go back to the previous nights back and lost a days processing. We implemented an incremental backup strategy  during the day so we could recover a system, in the worse case scenario, from a backup and the latest incremental. 

Under D3 I am wondering if there is a need to cater for this scenario. We can see that updates in memory are flushed to disk every 10 seconds, so that would alleviate our "crash" concern. However, I would still like to protect the system. Would the transaction logger be the option to use?

D3 Linux 10.4 supports FSI... this means that the incremenetal backups are gone?

VME and FSI
Unlike D3 10.3 UNIX or earlier versions, D3 10.4 supports two subsystems: the VME (Virtual
Machine Environment) and the FSI (File System Interface). The VME acts as a compatibility layer
for applications and provides a set of resources obtained from the host operating system during
utilization. On the other hand, the FSI serves as the primary file system in the host environment and
has multiple sources. In terms of the concept of VME and FSI, D3 10.4 UNIX aligns with the D3 Windows
version. All FSI-related features, including FSI Hot Backup and most NT commands (those commands
prefixed with NT), are supported in the same manner. If you have experience using D3 10.3 Windows,
that knowledge is applicable to D3 10.4 UNIX as well. For more detailed information, see the D3 User
Guide and the System Administration Guide.

I've reached out to Engineering on that D3 Linux 10.4 incremental matter. I'll reply here when I get my answer.

Related question: is it possible to use RESTORE-ACCOUNTS on a full save, and then restore remainder from incremental without using the full restore method?

First of all, note that this is a D3 Windows thread, and I'm assuming you're talking about D3 Linux. To answer your question for D3 Linux (incrementals not supported on D3 Windows FSI), since restore-accounts does not prompt for "restore from incremental" I'm guessing that you cannot do that. However, if you use account-restore, which does prompt for "restore from incremental", I'm guessing THAT will work. Haven't tried it though.

Yes, that is correct that we're talking Linux.  So, that begs the question about chickens and eggs for me.  What if the incremental has files and records from multiple accounts. Does the restore from incremental limit itself to just that account or does it go ahead and restore everything it finds on the incremental tape?

have not tested but firmly believe that it will read through the entire incremental and only restore the subject account, precisely as it does from the full save.

Brian, yes, my testing shows just that.  Only one account gets restored with incremental using ACCOUNT-RESTORE.  I also noticed that triggers are executed which in my case would not be good so I have to turn them off before I try to run it.  One question: I assume record deletes are also reflected in the incremental?
