I installed Micro Focus Studio Enterprose edition 6.0, I able to compile standalone programs and CICS programs. I would like to compile COBOL SQL (Oracle) programs, what are the steps and configuration do I need to follow, please advice.
Regards,
Murali. When you say that you wish to compile "Oracle" programs are you referring to programs that are compiled with Oracle's Pro*COBOL preprocessor or programs that are written to use the Micro Focus OpenESQL preprocessor with an Oracle ODBC driver?
A starting point for either option would be the Database Access Guide in the documentation.
Please see:
Database Access GuideThe option to look at if using Oracle's Pro*COBOL would be the COBSQL option and if using Oracle's ODBC driver would be OpenESQL.
If using COBSQL you must install the Oracle client software including the Pro*COBOL precompiler.
Please see earlier thread for installing Oracle client and Pro*COBOL
If using OpenESQL you will have to install and configure an Oracle ODBC driver, either from a 3rd party or from Oracle.
The software bitism that you install, 32-bit or 64-bit should match to the bitism of the COBOL applications that you wish to develop.
Thanks.

Regards,
Murali.1) Make a Database Connection as Chris/Document mentioned
2) Demonstration applications are supplied in the Examples\\Net Express IDE\\ODBCESQL directory, which is under your system's base installation directory.
3) Add SQL Directive
4) Add Code in your Net express and Compile them.
Let me know if you need more info.

Regards,
Murali. If you wish to connect to your database via ODBC, then you will need to firstly configure an ODBC Data Source Name (DSN). To do this , you should execute the Microsoft ODBC Administrator utility :
If you're on a 64-bit version of Windows, then execute:
o 32-bit utility : C:\\Windows\\Syswow64\\ODBCAD32.EXE
o 64-bit utility : ODBCAD32.EXE
On a 32-bit version of Windows, simply execute ODBCAD32.EXE
Under the System tab, click Add, and select the ODBC driver that you wish to use. The configuration requirements depend on whose driver you are using, which will be documented by your driver vendor. If using Oracle's own ODBC driver, the minimum information required is the Data Source Name, and the TNS Service Name. The latter name will be as defined in your tnsnames.ora file, which is typically located under the NETWORK\\ADMIN directory of either your Oracle client or server installation.
The tnsnames.ora entry will typically look like this:
XE =
(DESCRIPTION =
(ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = localhost)(PORT = 1521))
(CONNECT_DATA =
(SERVER = DEDICATED)
(SERVICE_NAME = XE)
)
)where "XE" (as in "XE = ...") is the TNS Service Name.
There should be an option to test the connection from within the ODBC Administrator Utility. You will need to verify that this works before you attempt to connect to your database from Oracle.
If you're looking to create a brand new application, then I would suggest taking a look at the OpenESQL Assistant, which is available from within the Net Express IDE. This tooling provides a way to rapidly create a working SQL application.
Kind regards,
SimonT.
