OpenSSL 1.0.2k for z/OS is now available on the Rocket Community portal.

Hello Peter.

I downloaded openssl-1.0.2k_b004.170321.tar.gz untared one and found a lot of text files are ASCII encoded. For example all include (exclude zconf.h and openssl/opensslconf.h), mans and so on.

Best regards,
Igor

OpenSSL 1.0.2k for z/OS is now available on the Rocket Community portal.

The Rocket z/OS ports are now using IBM’s enhanced ASCII features. If you unpack as per the Unpacking Distributions post, using:

tar -xoUXf

the files will be correctly tagged.

Thank you Jerry for explanation.

I was guided by the README.ZOS from the openssl download page:

Example directory /rsusr/rocket :

mkdir -p /rsusr/rocket
gzip -d openssl-1.0.2k_.tar.gz
tar -C /rsusr/rocket -xovf openssl-1.0.2k_.tar
chmod -R 755 /rsusr/rocket/bin/*
find /rsusr/rocket/ssl/man -type f -exec chmod 644 {} ;
export PATH=$PATH:/rsusr/rocket/bin
export MANPATH=$MANPATH:/rsusr/rocket/ssl/man

Maybe I don’t understand something but after tar -xoUXf ASCII files are still unreadable:

USER:/u/user/openssl.zos/1.0.2k/include: >head -b1 zlib.h

The README.ZOS file appears not to have been updated.

Do you have _BPXK_AUTOCVT=ON set in your environment? This is necessary to enable automatic translation.

These may be helpful references:

Thank you Jerry - it works.

It will be fine if _BPXK_AUTOCVT=ON mentioning will be added into Unpacking Distributions post.

Best regards,
Igor

Hi Igor, Sorry for late reply. All our ports are moving to use z/OS enhanced ASCII and operate internally in ASCII. All of them will also work just fine with EBCDIC. So, it is normal and expected that the files, once unpacked will be encoded in ASCII.
