  • 1.  Experiences using Uniface 10 on a laptop with a Snapdragon chipset

    Hi all,

Does anyone have experience using Uniface 10 on a laptop with a Snapdragon chipset? Snapdragon processors are based on the ARM architecture, while traditional Windows laptops usually use x86 or x64 processors (such as those from Intel or AMD).

    Regards, Peter

    Ciao Peter,

I suppose in Uniface terms it should be a different platform.

There was a time Microsoft Windows was available on Digital Alpha as well as on x86 and they were two separate platforms.

IMHO the story is repeating itself now with ARM architecture vs. x86/x64 again with MS Windows as operating system.

    Hi Peter,

    Good question.

The ARM architecture is gaining popularity. Not only for laptops, but also for servers to make them more energy efficient.

Uniface is not available for the ARM architecture at the moment, so we do not have an installation code for any OS running on ARM.

Requests for new platforms / new OS versions are handled by Product Management

    Ciao Peter,

reading  about MS Windows on ARM hardware I've found this description:
Windows 11 on Arm supports emulation of both x86 and x64 apps and performance has been enhanced with the introduction of the new emulator Prism in Windows 11 24H2. Windows 10 on Arm also supports emulation, but only for x86 apps.
It seems that a path to try Uniface on this platform is already here today!

Now I see your initial question under a different perspective... ;-)

    Good morning Sjaak and Gianni,

Thank you for your contributions. It is appreciated.

Sjaak is right in saying that the Snapdragon is gaining popularity. Right now, a laptop with the Snapdragon processor is the only one that can carry the CoPilot+ label. Every manufacturer has or will soon have Snapdragon processor-powered laptops and servers.

Right now, I myself am looking at a new laptop. Do I buy a laptop that meets the modern standard (CoPilot+) or do I not need it yet? I let my choice be determined in part by the support provided by the software I use daily.  Uniface, both development and runtime, obviously needs to work 100% on the laptop.

At this point, I don't even know if that emulation mode of Windows 11 will work.  I would love to test that out, but to buy a 2000+ euro laptop now and then find out that the, to me, most important software doesn't work also feels counterintuitive.

Uniface, of course, is not the only product not yet available for ARM technology. To me, however, it is the most important product.

    Regards, Peter

    Hi all

About a year ago I move from Intel to Apple Silicon (ARM). My Uniface installation is based on VMWARE.

The only thing I had to do was to install Microsoft Windows 11 for ARM on a new virtual machine. I was unable to convert previous virtual machines based on x86-64 (I reached the maximum time that defined the task as a waste of time).

After a normal Uniface installation (including .NET framework, which I guess is the key), everything worked perfectly. Everything. I had no problem at all and Uniface works as always.

    Regards
