  • 1.  Optimizing Performance with Smart PC for Rocket Software Applications

    Posted 9 days ago

    Hello Rocket Software community,

I'm currently working with Rocket UniVerse and have encountered performance issues when handling large datasets, particularly during peak usage times. It seems that the hardware configuration might be contributing to the problem. To resolve this, I am exploring ways to optimize both hardware and software settings, including utilizing Smart PC setups for smoother operation. Here are a few specific areas I'd appreciate feedback on:

    • Smart PC configurations: Does anyone have experience using Smart PC setups for Rocket Software applications? Any configurations that helped with performance improvements, especially in database processing?

    • Memory and CPU optimizations: Have you successfully optimized memory allocation or CPU usage when running Rocket UniVerse? Any insights on settings that can reduce lag or boost processing speed?

    • High-load resource management: What steps have you taken to manage resources effectively when the system is under heavy load? Are there tools or techniques that can improve stability and prevent slowdowns?

    • Database-specific improvements: Has anyone adjusted settings within Rocket Software to enhance database performance specifically? Any recommendations for reducing query time or improving data handling?

If anyone has successfully fine-tuned their systems for Rocket Software, I'd be very grateful for any advice you could share.

Thank you for your time and expertise.

Looking forward to your thoughts and suggestions!

The first thing that comes to mind, is to insure the /uvtemp space is large enough, and on ssd hardware.

Think of this as the swap space - so if the Db engine is choking when trying to update large data sets, and assuming you've already increased RAM, adding space to /uvtemp is first thing I would check.

This is a tunable parameter. Open a case with support if you need help with this. Or, follow up here

Here are some SAN details following a significant D3 10.2 RH7.6 installation migration to new SAN hardware:

Initial system was on an HP SSD SAN (details not provided)

    A D3 automated full backup took 8 hours (9pm to 5am) in a 24/7 Hospital environment

The HP SAN ran out of support and was replaced by a NetApp C series SAN (Approx 16TB in two HA)

The full backup time with the C series from NetApp took 25+ hours and never completed for operational reasons.

    Roll back - all OK

    Later:

    A250 series NetApp SAN installed:

Full backup now takes 4 hours

In general, it was agreed that the latency of C series at ~2ms was the major problem, latency of the A series was ~0.3ms

It was agreed that the D3 read-write methods puts a high random read/write load on the SAN that makes the C series unsuitable.

NetApp was very helpful in this process but the whole procedure was very stressful for both the client and their D3 system support!

Here are some data from NetApp:

Maybe I am missing the point, but you said the issue was with large datasets.  Maybe convert your dynamic records to dimensioned arrays.  I have seen programs that took 8 hours to run cut down to 10 minutes just by doing this switch.
