On a whim I entered a picture clause of 99-99-99 because I was looking for an edited entry for a European style date. The Screen Painter allows that in both the Format Picture and the Variable Picture properties without error. Unless I was dreaming I was convinced last week that this was working as intended. Users could enter 090205 and the field did edit itself as 09-02-05. It no longer works that way but shows 00 090205. Is there a way to use the dash this way?

Unfortunately I don't think so. If this is Windows, have you considered using the masked edit control? It is super for cases like this.

If it helps, here in europe (at least in the UK) we don't mind the slash characters as long as the date field is in DD/MM/YY format.
On the same point, I used to work with ICL mainframe COBOL which allowed you to insert any character into a picture clause by prefixing it with an "I" so you could have 99I-99I-99. This was very handy for time fields as you could create a 99I:99I:99. Could be a nice little enhancement.
