I'm starting the progress of migrating RM Cobol (Linux) to RM Cobol/Visual Cobol(Linux) with Eclipse (Windows) I've discovered the option to set the compiler directives in a file cobol.dir and have that control some of the compile, build and file options. I was wondering what is the compiler directive for the cobol.dir to tell it to use RM. I know its completely lazy, because I can change the Dialect in the Build Properties ... but I'm intending of doing somewhere north of 1600 programs, and anything that will allow me to move these from RM with a Text DE to RM with a Visual IDE would be helpful. I know my cobol.dir is working because I've moved the idxformat"21" to it for RM File access, as opposed to having the set command in the programs. Any tips for how to accomplish this ... any warnings for doing it this way? Long Term the plan is to move from RM Text DE to RM Eclipse to VC Eclipse ... but for now I need to learn Eclipse and start using it regularly which will involve me gett

Hallo, i use NetExpress 5.1 - i have set the CHECKNUM directive in my Project. If i rebuild the Project 136 Programmes are compiled correctly  - 1 Programm creates the Error. I have not found a description of this Error in NetExpress Help. Does anybody know, what this error means. Thanks, Thomas

Hello, I have VS6, VS 2008, VS 2010, VS 2012 and VS 2013 on Windows 7 Ultimate computer. After installing Visual COBOL PE for VS 2012 and when I open VS 2012 Pro, I get this error: This only happens in VS 2012. I can open and create new solutions and everything seems to work otherwise. I tried Googling and searching for a solution and could not find an answer. Does anybody know how to get rid of this error? Any help would be gratefully appreciated. Thanks, Tony

We are about to upgrade all our users ( -500) from the 8.1 run time to 9.2.3. I dont expect any problems, but because of the number of users involved, I just want to check. Is anyone aware of any possible problems running applications produced by the 8.1.3 compiler with the 9.2.3 run time? 

Hi Everybody, I downloaded the VisualCobol Academic Courseware and couldn't run the COBOLClass to extract the sample files. Any help would be appreciate it.

Everytime I try to install the Visual COBOL, I encounter the following error 0x80070643 (This application requires 32-bit Oracle Java 1.6 or later. Plase install Oracle Java and then run this installer again.). I have the following installed versions (1.7 and 1.8) and working properly, still the error persists at the time of installation. The PadRight() method for strings only seems to work with hard coded numbers. 01 str1 as string value "hello". 01 str2 as string. set str2 to str1::PadRight(10)   *> this works fine declare pad as string = 10 set str2 to str1::PadRight(pad)   *> this doesn't work - no trailing spaces in returned string Am I doing this wrong or is this a bug?#stringspacespadding#VisualCobolManaged

Dears, I have a COBOL program which would perform threads and call C function defined in direct.c  and the C function would call usleep() internally. As my understanding, C usleep() would suspend current thread only. But I found the C function would block other thread in COBOL, ie 'perform thread' So, I write a simple C function just call usleep() and relink runtime. The behavior is the same as I expect. COBOL call C usleep() would block other COBOL thread. If I replace the C fuction to C$SLEEP, the COBOL threads would run normally. My environment is AcuGT v9, AIX 7 64 bit Thanks & Regards, ARIEN

Dears, I am trying to integrate message-driven API into COBOL. Could I define a  event which would be triggered by C? Then accept it like keyboard/mouse events. I have tried COBOL call C , then C callback COBOL. But it does not work, because AcuGT does not support PROCEDURE POINTER  which I could pass to C from COBOL. How can i connect to a database and update its tables from my AcuCobol Program?

Hello, when using embedded SQL in JVM-Cobol I do have the problem that most of the existing Cobolsources (> 8000) do not have the "FullQualified"  Tablename in the FROM Clause of their SQL-Statements. With "native" Cobol it takes the username as the default Schema Qualifier. And if this is not sufficent it is possible to set QUALIFIER (as an SQL-Compiler Option). This is not working with managed Cobol anymore.  I do want to avoid the need to change all SQL-Statements to fully qualify the tablename.  Does anybody have the same problem and if yes .... maybe a solution ? Hello, I downloaded and installed Visual COBOL for Visual Studio Personal Edition v2.2 0.  I have Visual Studio 2012 Pro Version 1.0.61030.00 Update 4. I wanted to test the WCF program installed here: C:\\Users\\Public\\Documents\\Micro Focus\\Visual COBOL\\Samples\\WCF\\WEB WCF Service. When I follow the instructions given in the Readme.xml and key in a number and hit enter, I get the following error: The debugger highlights this line: Console.WriteLine(client.GetData(enter)); in the Program.cs file. Does anybody know how to fix this error? I'm an old COBOL programmer with 40 years of experience on WANG VS and HP3000 systems trying to learn something about the newer COBOL programming. We've recently switched to Visual Cobol from Net Express (Ms Windows on PCs). We use old MF Dialogue GUI and built in MF Cobol file formats. I'd like to create a simple client installation procedure, ideally automated though could be semi manual if simpler. Target machines could be standalone or acting as a server for a small group of client/users. What's the best way to do this? Some questions... is it better to install the run time licenses separately or can it be packaged together. Should I create a single exe or supply separate GNT files? Thank you, Linden

I also do this to get the length for the passwd INSPECT passwd-name TALLYING passwd-length FOR CHARACTERS BEFORE INITIAL " ". and this is my esql command where servername is "something.com:3306" userid is "admin" and passwd-name is "password" EXEC SQL CONNECT TO :servername  USER :userid USING :passwd END-EXEC. my compiler options are -Ps -Pr -Pe -o When i debug this code i get that SQLCODE=-1

I don't know if anyone has come across this before but, when using JDBC, if I specify setMaxRows on the PreparedStatement, no rows are returned. As soon as I remove this statement, I get all the results. This only seems to occur on tables which contain a column of type LONGVARCHAR and only when the LONGVARCHAR column is returned in the ResultSet. On tables without LONGVARCHAR columns I can use setMaxSize without any issues. Another problem that I am encountering with the same tables is that, if I remove the setMaxRows statement and begin processing the ResultSet, when I get to the LONGVARCHAR column, I am unable to read the value. I've uploaded a simple c# project which uses a persistent object class and DevExpress XPO (xpress persistent objects) to bind a SQLite database table (called trans_item) to a DevExpress GridControl.  I have also uploaded a Visual COBOL project which tries to do the same thing.  I am trying to translate the c# persistent object class (trans_item) into Visual COBOL.  The problem I am having is in defining the attributes.  There are three DevExpress attributes I need to set.  I have looked at the Visual COBOL documentation on attributes and also at the the CustomAttributes solution under Micro focus Visual COBOL Samples.  The c# project works.  There is something wrong with how I am defining the attributes in Visual COBOL.  The editor gives an error of "incorrect program structure" for the first instance of "attribute" in the code.
