Problem:

  • Product Name: BES/VBE
  • Product Version: NA
  • Product Component: HP-UX tusc tool
  • Platform/OS Version: HP-UX 11x

Unlike AIX or Solaris, HP-UX does not provide the truss tool for monitoring systems calls. However recent versions 11.x do provice a very similar tool called tusc available to all users. There is however no manual page at this time (although tusc -? does provide some help).

Resolution:

There are two ways to use tusc to monitor a process. You can either start the process inside the tusc environment or you can attach the tracing to the process using its pid.

To start the trace from the beginning use this:
$ tusc ./process > tusc_out.txt

To attach the trace to a process use the pid:
$ tusc

Useful command line options:
-o
-v verbose output
-T "%D %r" timestamp with formatting characters
-s allow restriction of calls to be traced
-d allows restriction of files descriptors (use ! to omit)
-l displays thread ids.
