Problem:

  • Product Name: BES
  • Product Version: 5.x, 6.x
  • Product Component: Installation
  • Platform/OS Version: All

When installing BES, what exactly should be user/group requirement for BES installation?

Resolution:

The only requirement is that it should be installed by a non-root user.

But, here are some detailed suggestions.

a) The requirement for "user" is the owner of the software which is given the rights to upgrade the software. Full rights should be given to user. This should not be root.
b) The requirement for "group" is only read and execute rights needed. Unless, you intend to allow a particular group of users to upgrade the software, then you may give that group full rights.
c) The requirement for "others" is only read and execute rights needed.

This should work in general case. There are some specific cases that are identified for AppServer, as given below:

a) If running Apache on Port 80, then you need to know that port 80 is restricted port on Unix systems i.e. reserved for super-user or root level users or services. If you are running on solaris or linux and lack super-user privileges, then apache will be running on the back-up port number. by default this port number is 7070. Please try connecting to http:localhost:7070. [Refer to http://info.borland.com/devsupport/bes/faq/5.2/webfacilities/apache_iiop_connector.html#apache_port ]

b) If using Multi-user Mode so that different users can own multiple Managed Objects (MOs) managed by the same Agent without granting access to other MOs or BES components you do not own, refer to http://info.borland.com/techpubs/bes/v65/html_books/installguide/instun.html#startas_script
