Problem:
In particular, I'm looking for documentation on how to use the Net Express Application Server process. We did find info on the run.exe program, but am having difficulty in trying to get displays to be redirected to an output file for future review.
Is there any documentation available to help us with the Application Server Runtime environment?
Resolution:
This product provides all the support files necessary to support the execution of COBOL application programs. The way in which Applcation Server gets used is the execution of a COBOL application program.
When you create your COBOL application program check the "Dynamic" checkbox and your program will look to the registry on whatever computer it is running to determine the location of the COBOL Run-time files necessary to support execution of the program.
If you don't use the "Dynamic" checkbox you must set the PATH and COBDIR environment variables to point to the drive:\\path\\ApplicationServerFolder.
set PATH=drive:\\path\\ApplicationServerFolder; %PATH%
set COBDIR=drive:\\path\\ApplicationServerFolder;
Redirecting application program displays
When you execute a program from a prompt, you can redirect the displays from the program to a text file. The text file can be in the current folder where the program is executing or some other valid location on the system.
C:\\FOLDER>MYCOBOL.EXE>RUN12.TXT
The above command will execute MYCOBOL.EXE and capture it's display output in a text file named RUN12.TXT in the C:\\FOLDER location.
When running several COBOL programs from within a batch file, use a single redirection character (>) following the first program name and two redirection characters (>>) following the 2nd through nth program name. The single redirection character will create the log file, subsequent programs with two redirection characters will have their output concatenated with previous output to the file.
If you type "help<Enter>" at any prompt, Windows will list the commands that are supported.
Open Windows Help, type "redirection", and display "redirection overview". This will explain how to redirect your program output.
