This article addresses how to perform manual installs on client machines, specifically a silent install using the Windows group policy.

Problem:

It can be tedious to perform manual installs on client machines. Using the group policy it is possible to "push" the runtime to client machines silently, without prompts.

Resolution:

Follow these instructions to use the Windows group policy to perform a silent install:

  1. Put the runtime.msi and the liant.lic file on a network share available to the users who are supposed to get the software. E.g. \\\\<servername>\\NETLOGON (this is actually C:\\WINDOWS\\SYSVOL\\sysvol\\<domainname>\\scripts)
  2. Apply read rights for those users.
  3. Start the Group Policy Management program from the Administrative Tools in the Configuration Panel.
  4. Expand Domains.
  5. Expand your domain.
  6. Expand Group Policy Objects.
  7. Create a new Policy or select the policy you like to edit.
  8. Select Edit... from the Action menu.
  9. Choose whether you want to apply a Computer Configuration or a User Configuration.
  10. Expand Software Setting.
  11. Select Software Installation.
  12. Select New, Package from the Action menu.
  13. Browse to the network share where the runtime.msi resides. Warning! Do NOT use the absolute path to the file but the share path! E.g. \\\\<servername>\\NETLOGON.
  14. In the Deploy Software dialog box choose the Assigned radio button and click on OK. The software package now appears in the Software Installation List.
  15. Select the package.
  16. Select Properties from the Action menu.
  17. Select the Deployment tab.
  18. Check the Install this application at logon checkbox.
  19. Select the Security tab.
  20. Make sure the concerning users have Read permissions.
  21. Make sure the client workstation reboots (at least once) and not just logs off and on again.
