We are currently using v10 and are planning to upgrade to v12.14 during the 4th quarter.  Has anyone made such a large jump in versions?  Where there any issues/problems when you did so?

Thanks,

Hi Linda :

I don't know what platform you are using but regarding to Windows there will be no problems in the upgrade process from release 10 to 12. Also the same thing if you are using Wow Extensions fro the GUI development.

Linda, I have helped multiple clients make this jump (from v10) and even earlier (from v9 and even v6!).  As Humberto says, it does depend a bit on your operating system platform.  Can you supply this information, please?

My clients also were using some third-party add-ins which needed to be refreshed to accommodate the changes that have happened since v10.  In one situation, the original publisher of an add-in was no longer in business and the current publisher was really not technically competent to provide assistance.  Are you aware of any 3rd party add-ins?

For the most part, if you are using straight, unvarnished RM/COBOL, you will be able to make the transition quite easily.

Best regards, Tom.

Our only 3rd party add-ins are the ActiveX components. We are currently on Windows 7 but need to convert to v12.14 before we upgrade to Windows 10 this winter and our management wants to make sure that the RM/COBOL upgrade doesn't slow down the Windows upgrade.

Thank you.

Sorry - forgot to mention that the ActiveX components are from DBI Tech (and a couple of Windows components also).

Linda, thanks for the update. WOW Extensions falls a bit outside my expertise. Perhaps Humberto can add some information.

Hi Linda

Sure you will no get any issue. Unless you change you development environment from 32-bit to 64-bit. Be aware that if you buy a new 64-bit version and your old ActiveX controls are for 32-bit , you must be carefully wit the appropiate environmet configuration.

The ActiveX control must match the runtime system being used: 32-bit WOW programs can only use 32-bit ActiveX controls, and 64-bit WOW programs can only use 64-bit ActiveX controls.
I suggest to check supplement v12.14 for further information.

Thank you for that information - we have to switch to 64-bit when we go to Windows 10.

I'm curious -- why do you have to go directly to 64-bit RM/COBOL for Windows 10? Upgrading to 12.14 and to 64-bits at the same time is a double-hop because, as Humberto pointed out, besides the version jump, you'll have to replace your ActiveX controls with 64-bit controls which may not even be available from your vendor and may introduce compatibility issues since you'll likely be getting newer versions of those as well. So I'd suggest you move to 32-bit RM/COBOL 12.14 first -- it runs fine under all versions/editions of Windows 10 and will work fine with your existing ActiveX controls. Then you can evaluate and move to the 64-bit version as a separate step.

Hi Linda,

Studio Controls for COM from DBI Technologies are not available in 64bit, so my recommendation is to move to RM/COBOL Runtime Plus 12.14 32bit on Windows 10. We have it running under Windows 10 64bit without any problem.
