how can I change the Text of a Label or hide it, if I have not a corresponding field?
Why is $labelproperties working on a Field and not on a Label?

I think the brief answer is "You can't". 
However, you can do something like this using hyperlink fields, and then editing all the properties (font, mouse pointer etc) so it is 'effectively' a label. 
Then you set the field value rather than the $labelproperties. 

Bonus question, "Why can't I set a label position to move with the field it's attached to?"

Hi Iain & Norbert,

AFAIK the old technique to use a field to mimic a label could be applied with whatever widget is used for the field;
again AFAIK from the field using a field as label is a technique used A LOT into Uniface applications "coming from the past" (U4 + U5 + U6 and also U7) and it still works like a charm.

I appreciated the Iain's request to possibly move the label together with the field it's attached to when $paintedfieldproperties is used; it would be nice if the label can also be moved as a separate object.
