Cloud Computing is big news at the moment and by using the Azure option for Visual COBOL for Visual Studio 2010 R3 you can create and deploy COBOL applications for the Azure platform.
What is the Azure option ?
It is an add-on to Visual COBOL, available on request, providing functionality to enable creation and execution of Azure Cloud Services. It consists of:
- Run-time support
- Demonstration programs
- Integrated into the Samples Browser
- Additional Help
- Visual Studio IDE integration
- New Cloud project category
- ASP.NET Web Role
- WCF Service Web Role
- Worker Role
- New Cloud project category

- Windows Azure Tools for Visual Studio 1.3
- IIS 7.0 with ASP.NET
Platforms
- Windows Vista

Hints and Tips
- You must run the Visual Studio IDE with elevated permissions
- Use the Compute and Storage Emulators to develop and debug the application on a development machine
- Be patient when deploying as the deployment may take several minutes to complete.
Limitations in the initial release
- No EXEC SQL
- No Consolidated Tracing Facility
- No native code execution
- Partial trust is untested. All templates, including those for Microsoft languages, default to Full trust.
- Full IIS 7.0 Web Roles are not supported. The <Sites> section must be removed manually from the .csdef file
Recommendations
- Take a look a the help information. It contains a tutorial on creating and deploying a simple Azure application using the Visual Studio IDE.
- Start the Samples Browser and take a look at the Azure samples.
- Use Visual Studio Ultimate Edition for deployment to Azure if possible. The Intellitrace feature is extremely useful for determining problems in a deployed application.
