ZMF Explorer no longer available in the marketplace?

What should we communicate to our developers?

Hi Lisa,

We've removed ZMF Explorer (community edition) from the VS Code Marketplace. The reason: recent VS Code releases, combined with ChangeMan ZMF 8.3.2, introduced compatibility issues that affect the extension's core functionality. We had been discussing whether it made business sense to keep the community edition as well as the new VS Code plugin (which will be greatly enhanced and function as an IDE compared to the community edition). Rather than continue patching a version that has an unrelated architecture from what's coming next, we made the call to sunset the community edition and focus that effort on the new plugin. Please note, this wasn’t an easy decision as there are expected ramifications to the community. Initially the plan was to wait until the new plugin was available, however the latest compatibility issues caused the decision to be accelerated.

A few things worth knowing:

  • If you already have ZMF Explorer installed, it will keep running as-is. It won't be removed from your machine.
  • However, the plugin will not survive a reinstall, a new machine setup, or VS Code Settings Sync. Those functions pull from the Marketplace, and it's no longer there. If that happens, you won't be able to get it back.
  • There will be no further fixes to the compatibility issues in the community edition going forward.
  • There is no upgrade path from the community edition to the new plugin. They're separate builds and architecture, so continuing to invest effort in the old one doesn't carry forward. Because of this, we'd rather be upfront now than have people build workflows on something we can't carry into the new version.

If you're interested in the new plugin, the best path forward is joining our Beta program. I expect to have this announced late in August and we should be in position to kick this off mid to late September.

Please feel free to reach out to me directly with any concerns or questions.

Thanks,

Jimmy
