PICK Scheduler

In D3 PICK, how could I check (automated) to ensure that the scheduler is up and running? 

Would a PHANTOM job that checks the status of "bgsched" by issuing "where" command?

Is there a way from *INUX to have a cronjob check?  If so, how?
