We use mvBase extensively, along with Accuterm (GUI). We need to re-platform to another mv product as mvBase is EOL. We were all ready to go down the OpenQM  route, then Rocket aquirred the product and all development seems to have stopped! ( We have been deliberating the move for some time.) We have  looked at jBase and D3.  Rocket are pushing us down the D3 the path. I don't see many posts about D3 improvements, it all appears to be Universe or Unidata.

So my question is, what would be your platform of choice if you were moving away from your current mv version, or are you happy with your current platform for the foreseeable future (5+ years).

Many thanks.

Hello,

You will be happy with both platforms. Universe seems to me to have assets by the principle of the flavor that you can adjust.

Personally, 25 years ago I made the choice of Universe, others have opted for unidata.

Anyway, both evolve together and look more and more alike. The internal engines are almost common, especially since release uv12 and now uv14.

About the learning curve, it can be high if you want to take advantage of all the benefits of the latest developments, especially in terms of 'modern' development.

Universe may be a little more advanced than Unidata for new features.

I hope this help

As a Rocket Software VAR I support both Unidata and Universe. About 10 years ago the switch was made from our base product of Unidata to Universe. Most updates no longer came to Unidata first but were revealed on Universe. Although release 12 of Universe was not a great option since a lot of updates were targeted to release 11 instead of 12, I found that release faster and more reliable. Because our software uses UniObject for Java as our middleware and is 100% web-based, it is not so tied to telnet and there is a minimum of issues because we use browser technology which gets updated every 6 to 8 weeks.

I would recommend Universe as the platform to upgrade to.

With respect Christine, that sounds like a lot of marketing blancmange. I have not found anywhere a feature matrix for D3, JBase or the U* products, so for anyone (like the OP) wanting to make a choice it's not straight forward.

Your point about D3 is the first I've from Rocket that D3 may not receive significant enhancements in future. Would be nice to know where it stands in Rocket's long term roadmap.

OP - D3/Linux 10.4 is architectured similarly to D3/Windows in that it now uses the host filesystem, so a bit easier to deploy. Unlike the U* products, there are no file types, so you can't store your source code as individual files in a directory (and thus manage them with Git or similar). Connectivity into the DBMS works well with Java/.NET MVSP library. I think data replication with D3 Hot-Backup works a bit easier than on the U* products.

Hi Richard, how are you?

My advice would be to take the opportunity of the platform migration to modernize as well, transforming your old MV application into an API-driven application with a cutting-edge web front end, to stay competitive for 5+ years.

As for the platform, I can recommend Universe. We've been using it for a long time. It is very robust and scalable, and is fully supported by Rocket MVIS, which is crucial to API and web development.

We have developed a low-code/no-code modernization framework for MV applications, the Aleph MV Framework, that I believe you saw in a demo in its early days some time ago. It has evolved a lot since then, and it has been playing a crucial role in the modernization of our large MV application. This not only preserves the investment in our main asset, but also positions it for future growth and innovation.

I would be happy to discuss how I can assist you with this challenge. Please let me know if you are interested.

  Regards,

  Enrique
