We have many WebDE applicastions . We also use Wildfly(formerly JBoss) as our Java Appication Server.

As such, we make use of RedBeans.jar and asjava.jar in order to make connections , create RedObject(s) RedField(s) etc. We also make use of the uObject ReadData, WriteData, DeleteData, ClearData, PostRead, PostWrite, PostCreateServerEvent methods and the uQuery Select method.

I think WebDE with Microsoft ASP applications woild be similar.

MVIS seems to not take into account the above. Universe says it now ships WebDE with MVIS but WebDE is also at its end of life. Also, WebDE only works with Java 8 so it is not keeping up with Java releases.

There isn’t even a Forum for WebDE in this community.

Does anyone else use WebDE with Wildfly or ASP? If so, are you concerned about the future of WebDE? Do you have plans for your WebDE applications and how you plan convert the uObject and uQuery methods once WebDE is end of life?

Hi Brian,

I never used WebDE, but yes I remember hearing about the end of life for WebDE in the last Multivalue Roadmap, and that applications actually relying on WebDE should be “migrated” to Rocket MVIS.

In my opinion, I wouldn’t be expecting an automated migration from WebDE to MVIS, but something more like “re-thinking”, “re-building”, or “re-creating” your applications with Rocket MVIS, a product that I use and recommend, as it is scalable, dockerizable, and supports OAuth security and Open Telemetry.

In that sense, I can offer you help to re-create your existing WebDE applications as modern web and API-based applications that run on Rocket MVIS.

Please contact me at qmurphy@aleator.com.ar if you would like to talk about this in more detail.

  Best,

  Enrique

Hi Enrique,

I do use WebDE. The issue I have with Rocket is that  they are abandoning of WebDE with no clear path of upgrade to their new offereing. As an example, WebDE has RBOs that have methods and properties that are available to jsp pages. There are built in method such as ReadData, WriteData and DeleteData which we have used extensively over the years. With these gone and no real replacement it is akin to Rocket removing the READ, WRITE and DELETE commands from Universe and telling you that you can keep using Universe, you just need to re-write these basic functions for every single prrogram that you have.

Brian,

I have been a developer for over 25 years, so I can perfectly understand your situation.

You say that you have many JSP web applications built with WebDE. Since WebDE end of support is really close, you need to re-create those JSP applications using another tool.

I am offering that to you: to help you re-create your web applications with our framework and our expertise. We have created the Aleph MV Framework, a framework specifically designed to build web and API-based MV applications, and we also offer development services and consulting services.

Aleph is built with Javascript and MV BASIC. All web applications and APIs are fully controlled in the MV server using MV BASIC, so you don’t need to learn any new language or technology to build web applications and APIs with Aleph.

  Best,

  Enrique
