I've started this thread so that we (Acucorp) can get some ideas of the enhancements that our customers want to see in AcuBench. We have a lot of enhancement requests of record, and we need to prioritize them.

You should see an increase in AcuBench enhancements in the near future, so your input is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hi Marilyn, very brave of you to post this. :)

A few things I would like to see:

- Tabbed windows like VS.NET for quick open file navigation.

- A tool like AxDefTool, or the Object/Class Viewer in VS.NET to display heirarchal tree view and grid view of activex/com and .net def file classes and member properties and methods, enumerations and events.

- Drag and drop .NET control support(planned already?).

- Drag and drop Java Bean support(planned already?).

- Code outlining for expand and collapse(popular in VS.NET and SharpDevelop) of cobol division, section and paragraph in the code editor. Also, specially marked comment tags that define regions that can be outlined. (ie. VS.NET #region, #endregion)

- Context sensative help where pressing F1 while cursor is on an acucobol keyword will list all related help topics.

Plenty more I can't think of right now.

Can you tell I like Visual Studio.NET ? :)

I'm just a brave kind of person :D

Thank you, this is exactly the kind of input we need. I really appreciate your response.

One more:

- ability to compile a program that is not part of a project.

Thank you for your posting. These 3 enhancements would be to the runtime, rather than to AcuBench (which can only offer what the runtime allows). However, I would be happy to pass them along to the development team. Thanks again.

- Clicking the working storage gives us the data description entries. I would like the search option to work.
- Feature to use animated bitmaps in stead of bitmapstring
- Feature to use skinns
- Ability to use controls upon a bitmap
- Ability to say : DISPLAY FRAME1 - when doing so, it would display all the controls inside FRAME1 with there new values
(for now I use DISPLAY FORM1) - Runtime enhancement ?

I would like the Acubench editor to be enhanced not to insert a blank line at line 1999/2000 when loading a source module exceeding 2000 lines.

It does this whenever the source module is filled out to 80 columns for all lines, as is frequent when using ANSI format and the ID area in 73 - 80

Hi Alan;

This sounds like a bug, not a feature :-) Have you called technical support about this?

We reported it several years ago as a bug and got absolutely nowhere with Acucorp support. So we have learned to live with it It is simply a nuisance and it would be nice to have it corrected.

BTW, if the code is over 4000 lines, the problem can occur at 4000 (& maybe 6000) also, but for some reason this occurance does not happen consistently as does the incidence at line 2000.

Hi there.

I would like to be able to draw a box (similar to a frame) around controls on a screen - something that's ONLY decorative.

Secondly I would like to be able to right-justify text within a checkbox/ Radio button. We always right-justify our labels as they are all linked to a variable, and therefore screens look better if all the labels are right justified. Maby you can specify the size of the space between the box/button and the text? Pushing my luck?

We would still like to see a real paged combo box. We have asked for this since we started using AcuBench 4.1.

Also we would love to use the new date control but it does not have the ability to accept or leave a date blank. It requires a valid date and some dates on our screens are simply not entered or are left blank until that particluat date takes place.

Thanks!:)

When typing in the Acubench editor, it would be nice if the backspace key change the way it functioned depending whether you were in insert or overtype mode. The backspace key should be non-destructive when in overtype mode, e.g. move the cursor back one space, replacing the character backspaced over with a space.

What I am looking for is what the Brief editor did almost 20 years ago...

It is much easier to use when modifying lines that need to keep the modification code in the correct location.

To keep all the other users who like the current operation mode, this function should probably be selectable in the editor settings configuration.

Just a thought,
Alan

Hi Marilyn,

One thing that bugs us about screen design in AcuBench is its inability to deal with an OCCURS entry using LINE 1 or COLUMN 2.

When we put a "table" of data on the screen that isn't appropriate for a GRID control, we have to manually hack the screen after AcuBench has built it with a single field, by adding our OCCURS code and changing the LINE and/or COLUMN entries from fixed to relative values.

Thanks for asking.

Ian
PS: We've reported bugs with the mod-code (area 73-80) so many times that we've given up as well :(

Thank you for the posting.

First, the mod code. You are correct, it doesn't work well at all, and we're very aware of that. Unfortunately, the way that AcuBench was originally designed prohibits us from changing the way that the mod code is done without completely rewriting the code editor. We will probably do it some day, but not real soon.

An alternative to that is to use version control, and we've spent some time talking about that in Webinars and in our training classes. The free CVS is a good way to track modifications without having to mess with the mod code area at all, and with AcuBench, it is two clicks (once you get it set up). If you want to try this, let your account manager know and we can get you access to the Webinar that talks about which files to save, and also give you a .ini file with the commands already entered.

As for the OCCURS. I'd like to hear more about it. Are you displaying in entry fields? Can you email me one of your hacked screen sections? Send it to mprince@acucorp.com. Thanks.

Another option that would be nice would be one to backup .cbl files prior to generating new source. There have been times here when that would have been very useful.

I would like to see a new control, not sure what is called but, it contains a home arrow for the beginning file, an end arrow for the end of file, left back arrow one record, and right arrow forward one record, displaying the record number of x amount of records with in the file.

Add help to popup screens, right click on control fields for help etc.

As there has been another thread started in the forum for list box and right hand mouse depression, I guess it should be an enhancement. What is required is that when clicking the rhbutton on a list box, the porgram knows which list line the mouse was over when the button was pressed.

Maybe I did not express this properly, while developing and working with the bench it would be nice to have hot button for the help guide or when another window open and there are push buttons at the bottom of the screen there also a push button for help on the topic in question. Sorry if I mislead you earlier.
