I am trying to code a DB2 sql fetch statment, and find the pre-compiler will not let me have a receiving field greater than 254 bytes, even though the manual says theat a varchar (pic x) can be up to 4000 bytes, any ideas?

ps the pre-compiler is the IBM supplied for DB2

Problem solved -

Ineed to declare as a variable as follows

01 var-name.
49 var1 pic s9(4) comp-5 value 0.
49 var2 pic x(2000).
