We have clients with networking backup software that backs up different servers during the night. We also have some Acucobol processes that process during the night. We can try to managing the scheduling, but that is not always 100% sure, particularly with Net access and world wide users.

There are two issues:
1. Insuring a good backup
2. Managing the fact that a file may be temporarily unavailable. In our case we are sometimes getting a FAE 23 Error during the time the backups are taking place.

It is also possible that virus scan software might cause the same problems.

What suggestions do you have for managing this situation.

How about catching the 23 error, make a pause and try again? Showing a message to the user in a separate thread that there might be some issues with backup and/or virus scan causing preliminary problems.
