Anyone heard anything about a version of thin client that can run under Windows CE? Our business is really starting to take off in the wireless mobile area. Currently we offer 2 methods to run our application from wireless handheld unit Telnet CE and remote desktop. The Telnet method works great, but we are in the process of converting to GUI as well. The remote desktop solution has it's quirks and isn't ideal...

I would love a acuthin.exe that would work on Windows CE (4.2 or 5.0)

Windows CE does not contain the dlls required by Thin client, so I doubt that a Windows CE version can be made.

That post is almost a year old. I was hoping some progress has been made in this area ;) Or at the very least a statement like "Yes we will be moving towards that goal" OR "We have absolutely no plans to develop thin client on Windows CE".

Yes, I would second this request for a Windows CE thin-client.

We have a few customers that are starting to use Windows CE RF PDTs (Portable Data Terminals) and we would really like to develop some GUI applications for them instead of the boring character-based screens.

Cheers

What are you guys currently using as a telnet client on your Windows CE RF PDTs? We have been using wavelink's telnet CE which works quite well when our servers are Unix based.

I'm sure there are equivalent calls under windows CE that acuthin requires. If not, then I bet they can be written...

We use TTWin from Turbosoft - you can find it here http://www.ttwin.com/. They have telnet software for desktop and CE devices, with a common feel. We've used TTWin for nearly 15 years and are very happy with the tools it provides, like screen hotspots and complex scripting capabilities.

Perhaps Acucorp's new AcuXUI would work? This is the java version of thin client?

AcuXUI will require a JRE. I believe there is CrEme which is a JRE for Windows CE and then the UI could be on the CE device that would run an application back on a server. This tye of connectivity implies that the connection is persistent or that the COBOL program saves state if the connection is dropped.

AcuXUI requires a Java Runtime Environment (JRE) version 5.0, I have not found a JRE based on this for Windows CE.

Hi Rob, we're now trying Samsung Q1 UMPC to bypass Acu inability to support Pocket Pc's. It works, it' WinXp! So WebThin and Thin do their job. It's still a bit expensive and not pocket portable, compared to PocketPc devices...

If you are asking about thin client, the runtime or acuxui on Windows CE, nothing has been done, nothing is scheduled to be done.

Sorry
