We have a network with Vista on the server and workstations. We are able to work on the system for a while and then it freezes. It's not possible to go to Task manager to end the application and the system has to be shut down. We are using SP 1. Is anybody able to assist ?

Thank you in advance

so wrun32.exe is not in the Task Manager Process list?

If you can not find the runtime process (wrun32) how do you know the application is hung?

Is this a mapped drive application?

We can't tell for sure if wrun32 is hanging, but our Acu application is the only application running at the time.

It is a mapped drive. We have shared a folder on the server and mapped the folder which contains the programs and data.

thanks for any input.

So on the computer where the hang is occurring, in the Task Manager, is there a wrun32.exe process?

If so, end that process

The problem is not ending the application. We are trying to understand why the system is freezing in the first place.

If the task manager is truly not accessible .. then you have to turn the machine where the hang is occurring off and then restart the machine

Mapped drive applications are fragile and this is one of the reason that Acu made AcuServer and AcuConnect and Microsoft has made sharepoint. There are a variety of reason and with Vista, Vista security may be interupting the process.

do you think it will solve the problem if we use the share name ?

Also, I should mention that there are 2 networks running - one of which is wireless. Our application runs on the cable network. Could this be conflicting ?

I'm probably grasping at straws at this point - but I'm desperate.

We have reproduced the error on another network.

The problem arises if we have a record opened on one machine and we access the record on another machine. The program hangs on the read statement. We do not get an error 99 as we normally do on XP. Instead the machine hang and have to be rebooted.

Is the problem with Acu or Vista ?

Thanks

This problem is due to using mapped drives. File locking and file contention are known issues when using mapped drives. Customer Care can provide some Word document details, but the answer is to either get AcuServer or AcuConnect Thin client so that file i-o is handled solely by Acu.

Are you by any chance storing information in the "Program Files" directory on the Vista PC? If so, we had issues when we stored our program and data their. Once we moved our programs and data out of there everything worked properly. Aparently the program files directory does some different things on Vista.

Search this forum for SMB2. There is a link somewhere to a MS knowledgebase article about this problem. The problem is Vista and the SMB2 protocol. There are ways to disable this and run the old version, SMB. You get the same problem if you open a word document or excel spreadsheet on a share and then try to access the same doc/xls from another Vista machine (trhough the share) word/excel will hang until you close the doc/xls on the first machine.

There are numerous articles on the internet about this. Google it and you will have find a lot of ways to solve it.

But I agree with Dilbert that AcuServer is a really good solution. It costs though.

regards,
Hans

The problem is related to Opportunistic Locking mechanism in Vista. We disabled Opportunistic locking to solve the problem. We set OpLocksDisabled to 1, EnableOplocks to 0 and SMB2 to 0.
