Our customer has a windows 2003 server, up to date service pack and patches etc.

Alot of users are using a bespoke software system (Known as TRACE) via remote desktop (currently around 16) and remote desktop keeps freezing - some times getting disconnected.

The only error in the event log we can find that corrisponds with the above event is this one:

    wrun32.exe, version 5.2.0 is about 8 years old and was made well before Windows 2003. I doubt that 5.2.0 is supported on Windows 2003. How are users disconnecting, are the using control, alt, delete and ending a process. There are termination signal such as control, alt, delete that do not end the runtime in an appropriate way. Hanging could be due to a variety of issues - corrupt files, someone running a huge query on data.

    The user will be working away in remote desktop, with several applications open, one of which is the bespoke application 'TRACE' that is using the wrun32.exe application.

    The remote desktop session will stop responding, at this stage we are still trying to establish from users what happens next, as were not sure if they then close the session or it disconnects (users :rolleyes:)

    However on the tests we have performed the remote desktop session freezes, but after a period of time it resumes - we have not seen any disconnections...

    The only error in the event logs that corrisponds with the RDP session freezing is the wrun32.exe error outlined in the original post - which is a syptom of the other is not clear at the moment, but knowing if this version is compatible (or known to be incompatible) with server 2003 would be appriciated?

    And of course any light that can be shed on what the error message 'actually' means would be most helpful :)

    The first version of AcuCOBOL-GT certified on Windows 2003 was 6.0.0, which is scheduled for end-of-life December 31, 2008. So you should upgrade to at least 7.0 but preferably to the latest version, 8.0.

    The information from the Windows event log is not helpful in determining what is going wrong. It could be something that is fixed by using a more recent version of AcuCOBOL-GT.

    It is possible that if the program performs heavy I-O it might appear to be hung which could affect the RDP session. Setting "FILE_IO_PROCESSES_MESSAGES ON" in the Runtime configuration file might help if that is the case.

    I strongly recommend upgrading to a supported version.

    The developers of the TRACE system are now looking into upgrading AcuCOBOL, so we'll wait and see how that pans out...

    Fingers crossed it will fix this problem, and we can eliminate it from our list of possible culprits.
