Rocket® ACUCOBOL®

 We have a COBOL program that we use to send emails from our system written in COBOL. It uses SMTP to link to email servers via a Socket using C$SOCKET and works well. We even send binary attachments using base-64 conversion. Now this works fine and was based on the example program sendmail. We now have a new requirement to access a specific email address, and we want to retrieve all emails sent to it, and update our system creating a service call. Has anyone else done this? Is there an example COBOL source code that does this? I have looked for one but have not found anything.  Any help would be most appreciated. Regards Brian

PROBLEM When AcuConnect Distributed Processing is under a heavy load the error message ‘Program missing or inaccessible’ maybe seen and the runtime will crash or hang. This is reproduced when the Server is Linux and the client is Windows. RESOLUTION On a very fast network and performing thousands of socket operations, the server does not have enough time to close a socket before opening a new one and as a result it is running out of sockets.  The solution is to configure the operating system to reuse and recycle sockets. On Linux systems run the following commands as root:     sysctl -w net.ipv4.tcp_tw_reuse=1     sysctl -w net.ipv4.tcp_tw_recycle=1   To make this configuration permanent use:     net.ipv4.tcp_tw_reuse=1     net.ipv4.tcp_tw_recycle=1 in - /etc/sysctl.d/99-tcp-reuse.conf then issue the following command:     service procps start   It may also help to check and increase the current p

We use acucobol.CVM class from wrunnet.dll to call COBOL program from .NET module.   Unfortunately we get FALSE from the Initialize() method and we do not undestand why.  Is there a way to get a more detailed error code/message? Hello, I just wanted to throw this out there and see if any other users are having similar issues.  Our applications are on the 10.1.0 and after the latest windows update quite a few of our customers on Windows 10 are getting 3707 errors [user does not have appropriate access permissions to the file (open)] when we are creating some temporary files.  The odd thing is that it is not happening every time, they go back into the same process and everything works fine.  Some of these routines that create the temporary files have been in place for a very long time and have never had problems till this week.  We have not been able to duplicate the problem yet, so I just wanted to see if anyone else was having the same problem and if they have been able to solve it.  It seems like the last update has messed something up, just not sure what yet.   Thanks, Scott Meiners

 I just watched the presentation of 10.2 and Acu to Web, they mentioned there are new open source libraries to that can be used to generate PDF's. I did not catch the name of the company that is providing this, does anyone know whom they are? Problem: Working in a Linux (Red Hat 5) environment, the following issues may occur: CALL "C$SOCKET" USING AGS-GETHOSTNAME, ws-hostname.The CALL returns no information for the host machine on which the COBOL program is executing. Any I-O operations executed via AcuServer return a file status 35: File not found. (open, sort) Resolution: This appears to be an issue within the server environment, where some socket libraries are not correctly installed, or not found by the runtime when shared libraries are in use. Problem: The user wants to silence AcuBench sounds but there are no AcuBench settings to turn off sounds. Resolution: To disable AcuBench sounds go in to the system sounds settings dialog via the control panel, or execute “control mmsys.cpl sounds”.  On the ‘Sounds’ tab under Windows, the ‘Default Beep’ is the one AcuBench uses for alerts, i.e. compile error, open source file modified, etc.  Scroll down to see ‘AcuBench application’ with only one sound listed, ‘AcuBench: Compile complete’.  Set both of those to none for a quiet AcuBench.

Problem: A very large Vision file must be expanded to accommodate more data than is available in the remaining FILLER item.  How can that be accomplished without using a COBOL program that would read the old file and rewrite all of the records to the new format, which would take several hours? Resolution: To increase the record size on an existing file use the Vision File Utility, vutil (vutil32 on Windows).  First run "vutil -augment ..." with the new maximum record size.  This does not rebuild the file, it is an instant command that only changes the file header to specify variable length records with the new maximum record length.  Next is to modify the FD to correspondingly specify variable length records with the new maximum and recompile the program.  The result is that new records added to the file will be the new larger size, while the existing smaller records can be accessed too. I want to discuss about Acubench. How can be an editor a mass of bugs like this. When there is a new release, we spend more time to find bug than write code. Honestly our work is write code. We cannot spend time to wait for a bug fix for an editor.   Said that, we decided to invest a little part of our time to find a different way. We tried Visual Studio Code. Bingo! We found our best editor to easily write Cobol, helped also by intellisense, compile and more. To help our self, we also deployed an extension called CobolSTF for VS Code (now published for all), that help us to our job; we created snippets and so on. VS Code is easy to configure and let us personalize the editor with extraordinary freedom. Problem: Using version 9.0.0 or newer, when attempting to add an XFD to the AcuXDBC system catalog an error is reported "Error: Empty condition tablename, condition 1".  Previous versions of AcuXDBC added this XFD without error. Resolution: The XFD involved was generated from old code and used the XFD WHEN directive to distinguish multiple record types in the FD.  For the first record type it specifies: $XFD WHEN RECORD-TYPE=5 TABLENAME=USERFILE The FD also included this directive: $XFD WHEN RECORD-TYPE=OTHER The requirement is that if the TABLENAME clause is used it must be defined for all of the WHEN conditions.  So the 'OTHER' condition is missing the TABLENAME clause.  Previous versions were not strict about this and reported no error.  To resolve add a table name: $XFD WHEN RECORD-TYPE=OTHER TABLENAME=OTHERTABLE Then generate a new XFD add that to the system catalog.

I am creating a gateway program to be used in XBIS that will drive a new process we are developing.  Our .net team requested that I update all '-' in variable names to "_".  As I attempted to do this in AcuBench the Working Storage screen would not accept "_" and would automatically convert them back to a "-".  Does anyone know why this is happening?  An Example variable name is: 'IP-VS-Message'...I had hoped to make that 'IP_VS_Message'.  The only option that I could use was to remove the '-' completely.  This made the final variable name: 'IPVSMessage' which it took but is a bit confusing.   Thanks

One of my clients unfortunately uses table names with German "umlaute" in his MS-SQL database.Acusql resolves the table name select * from dbo.süden with select * from dbo.sden. Is there a way to prevent this?
