Resolution:
What has changed from BES 6.5?
Borland VisiBroker 7.0 breaks with the packaging of Borland Enterprise Server 5.x and 6.x. What were previously VisiBroker Edition and AppServer Edition, in Borland Enterprise Server, are now separate products.
The concept of a VisiBroker Stand-Alone installation is redundant, as the VisiBroker installer can only install VisiBroker. This includes the VisiServices and VisiBroker for .NET.
Borland VisiBroker no longer supports Incremental Installation. This was primarily provided to allow a later extension of a VisiBroker Edition installation to an AppServer Edition or a Borland Deployment Op-Center installation.
How do I install from CD?
Installing Borland VisiBroker from CD can differ slightly from installing from an Electronic Software Download image.
On Windows platforms, the installer image is wrapped by a CD Browser. This will auto-run when the CD is inserted into the drive. Once installation is selected, all remaining steps will be the same as with ESD.
On some Unix platforms there can be differences in the way the CD-ROM drive is mounted into the file system. This is due to various extensions to the basic CD-ROM format (ISO 9660) and the way in which the operating system is told to recognize them. Borland VisiBroker 7.0 CDs use the RockRidge extensions.
On some older Unix platforms, the operating system may need a vendor patch be applied in order to recognize some CD-ROM file format extensions.
For example, on HP-UX machines the CD-ROM drive has to be mounted with something like "mount -Fcdfs -o rr /dev/dsk/c3t2d0 /cdrom", so that file names are not truncated to 8.3 format.
For more information on mount options for CD-ROM drives, or for necessary patch levels for operating systems either ask you System Administrator or see the VisiBroker Installation Guide.
How do I install VisiBroker for .NET?
On Windows platforms only (currently not for Windows on x64), Borland VisiBroker includes VisiBroker for .NET. On these platforms the installer will offer additional screens that allow the user to select whether and with what options to install VisiBroker for .NET.
There are three possibilities:
- VisiBroker for Java and C only. This is equivalent to installing VisiBroker in Borland Enterprise Server 6.5, where VisiBroker for .NET was not included.
- VisiBroker for .NET only. This will not install VisiBroker for Java or C . This option is equivalent to a Borland Janeva 6.5 installation.
- VisiBroker for Java and C and VisiBroker for .NET. This will install all three "flavors" of VisiBroker: Java, C and .NET. Note that VisiBroker for .NET is organized separately within the installation footprint. It operates independently from VisiBroker for Java and C .
Is there a difference between installing for development and for deployment?
Borland VisiBroker for Development and for Deployment are installed from the same install image (or CD). The distinction between development and deployment is made through the license that is registered after installation.
For VisiBroker for .NET, the mode of operation is selected as part of the installation process.
