Hi everyone,
I'm very new to Host Access and D3. We're currently working in a D3 Pick environment using the TCL (Terminal Command Language) prompt, and I need to learn everything from scratch.
I do have access to Rocket Software's D3 reference manuals, but they're quite large and a bit overwhelming to read cover to cover.
Could anyone please suggest the best places to find learning materials - especially video tutorials that cover basic concepts, TCL commands, creating simple programs, and understanding how everything works with real examples?
I really prefer videos or more practical, hands-on resources rather than just manuals.
Thanks so much in advance for your help!

Rima,
JES and associates have a free PDF book on a basic introduction to Pick. You can google it and download it. Excellent introduction to the basics.

Hi Rima,
I agree that reading the Reference Manual will be overwhelming. It's designed as a reference rather than a how to guide. It's best treated as a reference book, not a novel. Think of what you want to do, then look up the likely commands in the index for the syntax.
As Brian asks, is this D3 on Linux or Windows? There are some slightly different techniques between the 2 versions.
Also, Jon's recomendation of JES & Associates' free PDF book is a good one. JES has been involved with Pick/D3 for probably about 40 years.
Best wishes,
Warwick

Thank you, Brian Cram for your assistance! Based on your guidance, here is the information I have gathered so far:
-
Operating System: Microsoft Windows (Server 2012 R2 specifically)
-
D3 Version: Likely a Windows-native version of Rocket D3
-
Access Method: HostAccess terminal emulator from a Windows client

Rima, check out some of these videos. Please remember that D3 is a flavor of the Pick (MultiValue) database. All the Pick databases are about 95% plus compatible BUT they all know how to CREATE, READ, UPDATE and WRITE the database.

Here's a couple of documents I put together. The health check document is a guide for people supporting a D3 Windows system to make sure there is no trouble lurking, but it's also informational about some common D3 Windows commands. The other two are zip files that you unzip and double click the html document to navitate the tutorial.

Hi Peter,
Thanks for sharing the videos! I'll definitely take a look. It's good to know that there's such a high level of compatibility across the different Pick variants-especially since the core CRUD operations (Create, Read, Update, Write) are consistent throughout.
Appreciate the reminder!
Best regards,
Rima
