Hard drive backups that I try to FTP to a cloud server never finish. Here's the tape line from the pick0 file: tape /compass/picksave 500 f lx  # tape 3.

I know the complete file has been uploaded because if I close the FTP program (and I've used four different ones) the file is usable from the cloud for a FULL RESTORE. Below is the part of the FILE-SAVE that writes out the file to the Linux hard drive. There's a T-DET at the end of it. Any idea why the ftp protocols don't know that the upload / download is complete? Thanks and a tip of the hat.

Hi Richard,
I had the same, then tried something from about 30 years ago with Pick
and tape drives:
T-DET

Richard,

Which cloud service are you using?

It appears the save file in Linux is not attached. I would think the FTP process would have a problem accessing the file if it were still attached by D3.

It's not a cloud service per se. Just sending the file to my web's temp folder. The process does detach the drive and I've also run it from TCL using a T-DET at the end with the same results.

I Googled around for what I believe your problem is and it seems like getting FTP to signal that a file upload is complete is either difficult or not possible. Using another process to monitor whether the uploaded file hasn't changed in size seems to be popular.

This will not resolve the FTP issue but have you tried SFTP, RSYNC, or SCP? I used SCP years ago to move file save files between servers. SCP uses SSH so it's secure and it's faster than FTP. SCP is dated but if all you want to do is upload a file it should work.

The following SCP command will send the file /tmp/fullsave to a remote machine. User ID is janedoe. The remote IP address is 123.10.10.10. The remote file location is /D3. Suppress the status information with the -q option.

scp -p /tmp/fullsave janedoe@123.10.10.10:/D3/

Hope this helps.

Further testing indicates that it's the size of the file that's creating the problem. I used ftp for several smaller files and they could be PUT or GET with no problem, returning to a Linux prompt each time. Now that the problem has been identified, how can it be resolved?
