Good day,

I'm trying to understand the basics of the D3 environment. Mostly clueless, but not afraid.

I'm a 30+ IT person. Started coding in C in early 80's. We currently handle all aspects of networks, integration etc.

Have no experience with Pick, want to get up to speed on terminology, best practice environment etc.

To start:

Application uses Accuterm to connect.
I believe D3 is running on the MultiValue environment.

It is running on a Windows 2008 server.
These folders exist:
C:\\ProgramData\\RocketSoftware\\D3
C:\\Program Files\\RocketSoftware\\D3
C:\\Program Files (x86)\\RocketSoftware\\D3ODBC

Our support is provided via Nexustek, but certain tasks, I want to handle and understand.

  1. Modifying printer queues. I believe this is handled in COLDSTART
  2. Understanding the ODBC connect. I can connect to SQLDEMO, but don't know how to access the live tables.

I have some basic environment questions.

  1. What version are we running? How do I find out?
  2. Best way to connect and play..putty, Accuterm?..without breaking anything.

Moving the environment to a data center will be in the works

Thanks,

Bret Stern

Can you log into the application and get to the command line (TCL)? If so, please type WHICH CAD and copy/paste/reply. Who is your contact at Nexustek?

Brian,

Thanks for the message/suggestion.

Allen Ratcliffe is my contact at Nexustek.so far.

Also, is it ok for me to participate in this forum, or is it intended for VAR's?

Brian,

I found the TCL reference here: https://www3.rocketsoftware.com/rocketd3/support/documentation/d3nt/92/refman/index.htm

Correct reference?

Using Putty:

master dictionary: DM

I used "cls" to clear the screen..worked nicely.

Now how do I exit. The reference for exit says.

The exit command logs the D3 process off and disconnects it from the D3 virtual machine.

This won't effect the live users..correct?

Great start. Thanks Brian.

What is this accomplishing?  master dictionary: DM

Not noticing any passwords required when connecting: Normal?

What should I read to find out where the printer queues are initialized/created/edited?

Is this D3 environment transferable to Windows Server 2012?

Thanks so much for the introduction,

Bret Stern

WHICH CAD told me the D3 version and D3 system ID. Helps me understand the environment better. The rest I'll address later. Busy afternoon. Where are you located?

I'm in Santa Rosa, CA now, and also have an office in Tucson,AZ.

Very grateful for your help.

I'm working on adding a new location for a customer in San Rafael, Ca. which will leave the existing Santa Rosa located D3 as is.

My Immediate task for this new location is to create some new D3 print queues for printers over an ipsec vpn.

We have done this before with Allen. But this time, I want to do it.

I don't need an answer today.

I'll be at a data center tomorrow, creating an environment for moving D3 from Santa Rosa to a Fremont,CA location supported

by Hurricane Electric where we colocate several racks of servers. For this bigger transition (Down the road, June/July 2024). I would like to learn how to create the new environment, possibly update the current MV/D3 software on Server 2012 and backup/restore or rsync the exiting data to the data center.

If need be, we have several Ubuntu/FreeBSD/Windows Servers with containers and jails if better suited, but the way printers are handled in the Windows environment has been working really well.

Final question. Is it possible to have a development environment of MV/D3? I would be interested in that.

Take care of your biz and comment as time permits.

Very best,

Bret Stern

To answer your final question, we don't have dev versions of D3, but we do have OEM versions, but they are available to VARs, not end users. Best thing would be to talk to Allen or buy a single user copy of D3.

I talked with Allen about the training material thing. He's going to reach out to you to see about getting you some of the training material we've put together over the years. It's a little messy, but the content should help.  After Allen talks with you, we'll go from there.

I was wrong about the OEM versions. Mea Culpa. We discontinued them over a year ago. VARs have a different option now, but that does not apply to end users. So single user D3 copy would be good for you.
