Before upgrading 10.4.0 or earlier versions of D3 Windows, shut down and do a "standard" uninstall of D3. This will leave all of your data and Device Manager settings in place. This is necessary because of a bug in the 10.4.0.1 installer which will not allow installation of the D3 services once the upgrade is complete.

Not sure when 10.4.1 will be available, but meanwhile, my original comment stands:
Get a verified file-save (in case of problems, you can install from scratch).
Shut down D3
Do a standard uninstall of D3 which leaves data and registry (Device Manager) entries in place
Run the 10.4.0.1 installer which will then successfully upgrade 10.4.0 in place
Activation should not be necessary, so just <exit> the activation applet
