For decades, my customers have been emailing from their D3 applications by using a Windows command line email processor called "Blat." One customer claims that his IT guy told him that Blat will no longer work because their email server requires 2-factor authorization.

1. Is the IT guy correct?
2. Is there a workaround for 2-factor authorization to allow Blat to work?
3. Is there another solution?

Thanks.

Hello Richard,

I had an issue with Blat that stopped working because it doesn't allow SSL authentication, and I found an alternative that works similarly from the command line that could help you, it's called SwitchMail. I've included an example of how to use it:

SwithMail.exe /s /from usr.com /pass ****** /server smtp.office365.com /p 587 /SSL /to fp@gmail.com /sub "Factura Electronica Nro 001011000049072" /b "Documento electronico para usted. FACTURA numero 001011000049072" /a "C:\\FE\\file.xml|C:\\FE\\file.PDF"

I attach the installer in the message.

I hope this helps.

Regards,
Fausto Paredes

As a followup question, are there any solutions out there that would email report(s) directly to the consumer or file the report in a shared folder from a Linux based D3 system?

When we have implemented 2FA email authorization, our IT department made sure it will still work. Although we do not use Blat, our email tool works somewhat similar. The trick is that outgoing email address is not defined as a mailbox on the mailserver (therefore the 2FA does not apply to it). Our email program connects directly to the email relay to send emails. Our IT department did all the security for this solution, so IT department can make it work if they are willing. :)

I really can't say that Blat here is the problem.  The problem is your email server not recognizing that blat has permission to send email.  You need to figure out a way to send a password in the command line, that allows the email to proceed through.

Problem solved by using a Windows program called MAILSEND.EXE which allows for starttls to handle the two-factor stuff. If anyone needs the D3 side of the solution, reach out to me by email and I'll send it to you gratis.

We use a product called "Trustwave MailMarshal" as a "Smart Host" for mail in and out of each client's site. It can be configured to securely receive mail from a simple app that D3 can use to send mail. It provides full tracking of mail which is invaluable when a customer of our client reports that they didn't receive a message, providing confirmation of delivery including details of the receiving server, or details of the failure, making it easy to diagnose. MailMarshal is not free, but well worth the investment. I have enjoyed working with it since the 1990s when it first came on the market. This might sound like a "promo", but I have nothing to gain from making this recommendation. :-)
