Hi there,

Hope you can help :)

We are currently running a (very) old version of jBase 3.4 and are experimenting on a test server to migrate our accounts to jBase 6.2.

Could anyone point me in the direction of some documentation for what we would have to do to upgrade our accounts assuming we have jBase 6.2 installed and working on the new server?

Many thanks

Hi Mike.

First, thank you for downloading and installing jBASE 6.2!  You may be setting a distance record coming from 3.4 but this is doable and we appreciate your efforts.

If you are on current product maintenance and support, please bookmark the support phone number and remember to use support@rocketsoftware.com for specific technical questions.

The scope of a migration can vary depending on platform and application.  In many cases, the older jBASE database formats (J4 files for example) as well as directories can be dragged across and should, in most cases, just work.

BASIC source code, Procs, and Dictionaries should, for the most part, just work but, given the probable age of your operating system, will likely need to be recompiled.  For that, you’ll need all of your source code.

Where it gets trickier is moving your O/S users, Groups, device definitions, and other O/S level dependencies.  If your call out to the operating system commands from your code, you’ll need to make sure these commands are still available, and that they still work as they did in your era of operating system.

I’d recommend that you reach out to your Rocket Account Executive to explain your goals and to find out what Rocket resources may be available to help you on your journey.

If you are a programmer, or power user, you’re going to be amazed by what is packed into jBASE 6.  Its is not just a new version of the old thing, it excites every Pick developer who spends the time to look deeply into its capabilities.

Anyway, I hope this helps and thank you for checking out the new jBASE!

Best,

Bruce Decker

Senior Account Executive.

Hi Bruce,

Thank you for your encouraging reply! We’ll take onboard all that you have said. Any pointers towards documentation that might be relevant re: the system file etc would be helpful.

Kind regards

Mike
