Journal receivers are central to IBM i protection and healthy replication. As activity grows, receiver retention and journal-management settings require regular attention.
Journal management has long been available in the iCluster engine. In iCluster Web, core management tasks are available in the browser so administrators can review journal status, start or end journal management, and inspect configuration from one place.
The Challenge: Keeping Receiver Growth Under Control
As applications run and data changes accumulate, journal receivers grow in number and size. Administration requires a practical balance: retain what recovery and replication need, while controlling storage and maintenance overhead.
Teams also need quick visibility into:
- which journals are managed,
- which policies are in effect,
- and what action is currently available.
Having this information and control in one interface simplifies routine operations and makes current settings easy to verify.
Journal Management in iCluster Web
Open Management → Journals.
The Journals page provides:
- filtering by node, journal name/library, iCluster usage, management status, journal type, and remote status,
- table-level visibility into management state and receiver context,
- per-journal actions from the row menu.
From a journal’s action menu, users can open Journal management details and, when permitted, start or end management based on current state.
1) Start Journal Management
For a journal that is not currently managed, select Start journal management from the action menu.
The journal and library are carried into the form. Administrators can then configure management behavior, including:
- check cadence (once, weekly, or interval-based),
- processed-receiver handling (including remote-receiver handling where applicable),
- retention policy (age-based or cumulative-size-based),
- unsaved-receiver handling,
- and receiver user-exit / journal-specific options.
The form is conditional: only relevant fields are shown for selected options. This keeps setup focused and reduces input noise.
Continue with Existing Settings
If management is inactive and saved settings exist, management can be restarted from those saved values. The configuration is prefilled, reviewed, and adjusted before apply.
2) Review Journal Management Details
Select Journal management details to inspect the active or saved configuration in one view.
Details include management job identity, check cadence, receiver deletion behavior, retention policy, and local/remote receiver options as applicable.
This gives a clean read of how a journal is managed now, before deciding whether a change is needed.
3) End Journal Management
When management must be stopped, select End journal management from the action menu.
A controlled end (with delay) or immediate end can be selected based on operational need. After confirmation, a success notification identifies the affected journal, and the Journals page refreshes so status reflects the change.
Who Can Do What
Access is split between visibility and change:
- Viewing (Journals page and Journal management details): available to signed-in users.
- Start journal management and End journal management: available to superuser accounts.
For users without superuser access, management actions are not shown in the row menu.
End-to-End Workflow from One Page
From Management → Journals, administrators can:
- locate target journals quickly with filters,
- verify management status and receiver context,
- start management with policy controls,
- reuse prior settings when restarting inactive management,
- inspect full configuration details,
- end management with controlled or immediate behavior.
Discovery, verification, and action stay in one browser workflow.
Bottom Line
Journal receiver management remains a core operational task in iCluster environments. In iCluster Web, that workflow is brought together on the Journals page with clear visibility, controlled actions, and practical policy configuration.
The result is simpler day-to-day administration with faster verification and cleaner execution.
