Smart Diff Refresh in iCluster Web 9.4.1: A Smarter Way to Activate Out-of-Sync Files

Replication environments are built around one simple goal: keeping source and target systems synchronized. When an object falls out of sync, administrators need a reliable way to restore consistency while minimizing disruption to ongoing replication activities.

For physical files, the traditional approach is often to refresh the entire object. While effective, this can require significant processing for large files—even when only a small portion of the data has actually changed.

With iCluster Web 9.4.1, administrators now have access to Smart Diff Refresh, a new physical file refresh method that compares source and target data and repairs only the portions that differ. Rather than replacing the entire file, Smart Diff focuses on the changes that matter.

The Challenge: Not Every Out-of-Sync File Requires a Full Refresh

When a physical file becomes out of sync, administrators have several refresh methods available to restore synchronization. These methods are proven and reliable, but large physical files can present a unique challenge.

Consider a file containing millions of records. If only a handful of records differ between source and target, refreshing the entire file means processing a large amount of data to correct a relatively small inconsistency.

As file sizes continue to grow, administrators often look for ways to make synchronization activities more targeted and efficient while maintaining the same level of confidence in the recovery process.

Introducing Smart Diff Refresh

Smart Diff Refresh is a new refresh strategy designed specifically for physical files that exist on both the source and target systems.

Instead of replacing the entire object during activation, Smart Diff performs a detailed comparison between the source and target data to identify exactly what has changed. It then repairs only those differences while leaving unchanged data untouched.

The result is a more targeted refresh process that focuses on repairing differences rather than rebuilding an entire file.

How Smart Diff Works

When*SMART is selected as the physical file refresh method, iCluster compares the source and target versions of the file and identifies the specific records that are out of sync. Only those differences are repaired during activation.

This approach is particularly beneficial when:

  • Large physical files are mostly synchronized.
  • Only a small percentage of records have changed.
  • Administrators want to focus repair efforts on the data that differs.

Rather than processing an entire file, Smart Diff works at a more granular level to address the actual inconsistencies.

Available Within Existing Activation Workflows

One of the advantages of Smart Diff Refresh is that it integrates directly into workflows administrators already use.

The new*SMART option is available in the Physical File Refresh Method dropdown within existing activation dialogs.

Administrators can use Smart Diff when:

  • Activating All Out-of-Sync Objects for a Group

When performing a group-level activation, the refresh method options now include:

  1. *OBJ
  2. *RBR
  3. *SAVRST
  4. *SMART

This allows administrators to select the most appropriate refresh strategy as part of the existing activation workflow.

  • Activating an Individual Native Object

Smart Diff is also available when activating a single out-of-sync native object.

The same familiar activation dialog now includes*SMART as an additional refresh method option, allowing administrators to apply Smart Diff selectively when appropriate.

Visibility During Processing

Once activated, Smart Diff operations remain visible through existing monitoring workflows.

Administrators can confirm successful activation through Object Status and monitor Smart Diff activity directly from the Monitor page. During processing, the operation status displays SMT, indicating that a Smart Diff refresh is underway.

This provides clear visibility into the activation process while maintaining familiar monitoring experiences.

A Targeted Approach to Object Activation

Smart Diff Refresh introduces a more granular way to recover out-of-sync physical files.

Instead of replacing an entire file, Smart Diff:

  • Compares source and target data.
  • Identifies only the records that differ.
  • Repairs the affected portions of the file.
  • Leaves unchanged data untouched.

By focusing on differences rather than complete replacement, Smart Diff provides an additional option for managing physical file synchronization within iCluster Web.

The Bottom Line

When a physical file falls out of sync, the objective is straightforward: restore synchronization as efficiently and reliably as possible.

With Smart Diff Refresh in iCluster Web 9.4.1, administrators now have a new refresh option that compares source and target data and repairs only the portions that differ. Available through existing activation workflows, Smart Diff extends iCluster's refresh capabilities while providing a more targeted approach for physical file synchronization.

By bringing Smart Diff Refresh into iCluster Web, organizations gain another tool for managing out-of-sync physical files while continuing to leverage the familiar activation and monitoring experiences already available within iCluster.
