This article explains what happens when adding additional licenses to an existing License Manager in a Studio Enterprise Edition 6.0 installation containing either time-limited or full licenses.

Problem:

Sometimes there is a requirement to add an additional license count to an existing License Manager with an already predetermined license count. Depending on the type of licenses already installed, full or time-limited, there are repercussions on what may happen.

Resolution:

Scenario 1

The License Manager contains one hundred time-limited licenses and the user wishes to add a further twenty time-limited licenses with a duration of thirty days. The initial one hundred time-limited licenses are effectively disabled while the additional twenty thirty-day trial licenses take effect. The original one hundred time-limited licenses will resume their validity once the thirty day period has expired. To get round this problem and maintain the original one hundred licenses, the user should request a time-limited license for a total of one hundred and twenty users. Once this license expires, the original one hundred user license will come back into force.

Scenario 2

The License Manager contains one hundred full licenses and the user wishes to add a further twenty time-limited licenses with a duration of thirty days. The initial one hundred full licenses remain in force alongside the additional twenty time-limited licenses. The time-limited licenses will expire after thirty days.

Scenario 3

The License Manager contains one hundred full licenses and the user wishes to add a further twenty full licenses. The additional full licenses are simply added to the pool of full licenses bringing the collective total of licenses to one hundred and twenty.

The basic rule is try not to mix time-limited and full licenses on a network server for the same product.
