Describes how to correct the "environment establishing" error when starting MW.

Problem:

Opening MW fails with the error "Modernization Workbench environment establishing error. Failed to load control ‘ImageList’ from mscomctl.ocx. Your version of mscomctl.ocx may be outdated."

Resolution:

The mscomctl.ocx file is corrupted. Re-register the OCX file:
  1. Choose Start > Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt (or its equivalent on your system).
  2. In the Command Prompt window, navigate to the folder containing the OCX file, typically, C:\\i386.
  3. Type Regsvr32 mscomctl.ocx and press Enter.
