If you are using Enterprise Developer Personal Edition 2.1 for the development of applications that contain Chinese, Korean or Taiwanese double byte characters then you will need to apply the latest Enterprise Developer update.

This update includes functionality to correctly handle mainframe Shift-Out and Shift-In characters. The specific functionality that has been amended in the Eclipse IDE as follows:

  • Entry of   EBCDIC Shift-Out and Shift-In characters is now fully supported within the Enterprise Developer Personal Edition Eclipse IDE. This allows a user to  manually enter Shift-In and Shift-Out characters using the following key combinations:
    1. Shift-Out = Alt S, release then press O
    2. Shift-In = Alt S, release then press I

The key bindings are configurable and can be changed in the Eclipse preferences

  • Shift-Out and Shift-In characters are represented as “<<” and “>>” respectively when viewed through an Enterprise Developer editor session under Eclipse
  • The COBOL editor cursor and margin positioning has improved handling of Shift out, Shift in and DBCS characters

If you are using Shift-Out and Shift-In characters within Enterprise Developer you must ensure that on the download and upload of source files to and from the mainframe the Shift-Out and Shift-In characters are preserved within the source. If these are removed as part of the download or upload process you may get additional data within your source files. Most FTP tools can be configured to not remove Shift-Out/Shift-In characters. This can be done by using the optional QUOTE command. For example on a Korean environment you would use the following commands from a windows command prompt:

ftp  ip-address or hostname

Enter USER : & PASSWORD :

ftp> QUOTE TYPE B 6 E

ftp> get filename

ftp> put filename

ftp> bye

You will need to refer to your FTP documentation for details of your specific command or code page variants.
