This article details problems which may be encountered when attempting to license Studio Enterprise Edition 6.0 with a trial stand-alone license on a virtual machine.
Problem:
Attempting to install a time-limited or evaluation license will not work on a virtual machine if the user is accessing the virtual image via Remote Desktop or Terminal Services Client / Citrix.
Resolution:
A trial or evaluation license does not work in a Terminal Services / Citrix environment because it is a stand-alone license (ie. no License Server is involved) and as such allows unlimited use a on a single license. In a Terminal Services context this means that an infinite number of users can use the same license.
Having said this, a trial license will work on a normal virtual machine as long as the user does not gain access to it via Remote Desktop or Terminal Services Client which includes Hyper-V images. However, it is possible to use the third party remote control software Radmin which can be found at: http://www.radmin.com/
If the user insists on using a virtual machine and accessing it via Remote Desktop or Terminal Services Client, then it will be necessary to obtain a full license with a trial period within it which is then installed into a local license server or, instead, a license with a drop dead date. Both of these license types can be obtained via the customer’s sales representative.
