Enterprise Developer Personal Edition offers the ability to compile for syntax check as you type, leaving behind the need to wait for execution compilation queues, and enabling a very effective environment. These feature is available for free to help you get the most when developing COBOL applications.
At this time, We will continue to work with BANKDEMO. To see how syntax check is verified as you type see the following steps:
- Open the Eclipse or Visual Studio 2010 IDE and load the Bankdemo project
- Open the ZBNKPRT1.cbl program
- Go to the Procedure Division, and change the following statement:
SET WS-PARM-PTR TO ADDRESS OF LK-EXEC-PARM.
TO
SET WS-PARM-PTRd TO ADDRESS OF LK-EXEC-PARM.
You will see that immediately after you type the wrong parameter, an error will be displayed simultaneously
and now expanding the error by positioning the cursor over the "x" or on the parameter with the error
This process is very interactive and is valid for COBOL statements, syntax, data fields definitions, etc.
Another very useful feature when trying to correct and find out more about COBOL syntax or variable definitions, just position the cursor in the code where info is needed and press crtl space. A window will open with all possible options to help you quickly verify how to quickly fix the issue.
Now, to ensure syntax is being checked accordingly, you can select the proper COBOL language dialect that best fits the needs of our COBOL application. To do so, please see Build Actions for Eclipse or Visual Studio 2010. For these two links, please refer to the selection of the COBOL language only at this time. Future compilation threads will take place when time is right.
