Problem:

The PFKeys (function keys) and backspace key don't work in PuTTY when using Server Express on Linux/UNIX.

Resolution:

Micro Focus Rumba is the preferred telnet emulator, as it provides better emulation of the various standard terminal types.  PuTTY is a freeware telnet emulator that seems to have some problems with some terminal emulations.

However, if users wish to use PuTTY but have trouble with the function keys not working, try setting 'The Function keys and keypad' as "Linux" or "SCO" in the Terminal Keyboard section of the PuTTY Configuration.

In the Window section, ensure you set the size of the window as 80 columns by 25 rows, with the option to "change the size of the font" when the window is resized.

Attached is an example of the saved settings of a working Terminal session in the PuTTY configuration:

If you wish to improve the appearance of the screen you can also set the following configuration options:

In the Window Translation section, change the handling of line drawing characters from "Use Unicode line drawing code points" to "Use font in both ANSI and OEM modes".

In the Window Colours section, untick the "Allow terminal to use xterm 256-colour mode" and "Bolded text is a different colour" options, but keep the "Allow terminal to specify ANSI colours" option ticked.

The rest of the configuration can stay as default.
