Hello,

My Enterprise Developer Personal Edition for Visual Studio worked fine until my antivirus (Avira) detected a problem with the virus TR/Crypt.XPACK.Gen

After Avira eliminated the problem, the Enterprise Developer Personal Edition does not run correctly.

When I start the program I get the following message: "The Micro Focus CES daemon is not running. Please restart the service in order to be able to work with Micro Focus Enterprise Developer".

When I try to start the Daemon CES service from the Computer Management I get the following message: "Windows could not start the Micro focus CES daemon service on Local Computer. Error 1068: The dependency service or group failed to start."

My operating system is Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit

mfcesd doesn't have any dependencies, at least on my system, so I don't know what Windows is talking about.

What has probably happened is that the TR/Crypt.XPACK.Gen detection by Avira was a false positive, and in "eliminating" the problem Avira has actually broken mfcesd. TR/Crypt.XPACK.Gen is not a virus - it's a generic routine used by various trojans - so it can't have "infected" mfcesd. (It's remotely possible that someone created a virus that includes TR/Crypt.XPACK.Gen, but in fact new software viruses are rare these days; they're no longer a preferred avenue of attack.)

Note that Avira is notorious in some circles for false positives with this particular signature. See for example this unsatisfying discussion between Avira and one developer:

Finally I could fix it.

What I did was turn on all the following services from Computer Management:

- Micro Focus CES daemon

- Micro Focus Directory Server

- Micro Focus Event Monitor Service Shutdow Coordinator

- Micro Focus SEE Listener

- Micro Focus SEE Monitor

- Micro Focus XDB Server for ETD 2.1

- Sentinel RMS License Manager

Of those services, only Micro Focus CES Daemon and Sentinel RMS License Manager are involved in licensing. It doesn't hurt to start the other services (other than the resources they consume), but they aren't relevant to licensing errors.

The Micro Focus Directory Server handles service-directory information for Fileshare and other CCI-based services, and configuration and administration for Enterprise Server.

Micro Focus Event Monitor Service Shutdown Coordinator, Micro Focus SEE Listener, and Micro Focus SEE Monitor are part of Enterprise Server for .NET.

Micro Focus XDB Server for ETD 2.1 provides the XDB database manager, SQL Option, and similar functionality.
