Problem:
The "cob -V" command reveals the PRN (product reference number).   The PRN is an indication of the version of Server Express that is installed.   The PRN for my Server Express product is prefixed with R9.  What does this mean?
Resolution:
If you run "cob -V" and see that the PRN is prefixed with R9 it means you have the runtime product installed.
Micro Focus offers two distinct COBOL products for UNIX/Linux:
Server Express is the COBOL development product which includes both the compiler and the runtime
and
Server for COBOL (formerly known as Application Server for Server Express) which is the runtime component of Server Express. It can be referred to as the runtime or deployment product. It does not include the compiler or debugging tools such as Animator. Server for COBOL is suitable for installation on a machine where you do not need to compile COBOL programs as in the case of a production server machine.
In this example:
PRN=R9CTS/aad:9n.u5.51.05
the product in question is Server for COBOL 5.1 WrapPack 4 running RedHat Enterprise Linux 4.0.
