The MFDeploymentLockDown tool has been created to remove the 30-day trial license from the runtime environment of the machine on which the license has been installed. To this end, it enforces the definitive licensing conditions for which the machine is legally licensed.

Problem:

When Micro Focus Server 5.1 is installed, the installation process records the date. The product has unlimited usage for 30 days following this date. During this period, the installation is not locked down to the number of licenses that are installed in the license database.

After 30 days, the free 30-day trial period expires, and full license enforcement comes into effect. After this time:
  • The installation can run only the number of processes for which it is licensed.
  • The installation can run only the license types for which it is licensed, for example, Server for COBOL and Server for .NET; in that .NET licenses will only run managed COBOL applications, and ASLMF licenses will only run unmanaged COBOL applications.

Organizations that have purchased a license may want the deployment to operate under the conditions for which it is licensed before the trial period expires, rather than as unlimited usage during this period.

Resolution

The MFDeploymentLockDown tool is attached to this article.

The MFDeploymentLockDown tool is a C-based tool that removes the trial license conditions from a machine and the Micro Focus software then operates under the conditions for which it is licensed.
Note: The MFDeploymentLockDown tool does not require that COBOL is installed in order to run.
To run the MFDeploymentLockDown tool:
  1. Copy the MFDeploymentLockDown tool to any directory on the machine. The tool can be run from any location.
  2. In the directory, open a command prompt with Administrator permissions.
  3. From the command prompt, start the tool. The tool prompts you to confirm that you want to remove the 30 day trial period from your machine.
  4. Confirm that you want to remove the free 30-day trial period. The tool prompts for a response string, to confirm the removal.
  5. Enter the response string. The tool removes the 30 day license period from the machine.
Note: Once the program has been run, there is no way to re-initiate the free 30-day trial period.
