If you use Rocket Reflection Desktop to connect to hosts, you know that setting up your sessions just the way you like can save a lot of time. With a few simple options, you can make your sessions connect automatically, reuse favorite settings, keep your data secure, and even launch sessions directly from the command line. Here's a quick guide to make your Reflection experience even smoother.

Control When You Connect

By default, Reflection Desktop likes to help out by connecting you to your host automatically whenever you create or open a terminal session. But sometimes, you might want a little more control. Want to open a session and connect later? You can easily turn off the auto-connect feature.

Just open your session and head to the Settings. If you're using the Ribbon or Browser mode, click the gear or Document Settings icon. On TouchUx, tap the Gear icon and select Document Settings. Find the Host Connection section, click "Configure Connection Settings," and then uncheck "Automatically connect to the host." Now you decide when you connect!

Create and Share Session Templates

Once you've set up a session to match your needs-host, theme, keyboard mapping, and more-you can save those settings as a template. Templates are great for reusing your perfect setup, or sharing it with teammates.

To save as a template, open your configured session. On the Ribbon, just go to File > Save As > Save Template. In Browser mode, search "Save Template." Your template (with a .rsft extension) is saved in the Templates folder. Copy this file to a shared location, or give it to a colleague so everyone can work smarter, not harder.

Keep Sessions Secure with Encryption

Worried about unauthorized changes to your session files? Reflection can encrypt session documents, so only trusted users can access or edit them. Just open your session, select Save As, and choose an encrypted format.

If you prefer, you can encrypt, decrypt, or check a file's encryption status from the command line with FileEncrypt.exe. For example:

  • To encrypt: fileencrypt /e mysession.rd3x encrypted.rd3x
  • To decrypt: fileencrypt /d encrypted.rd3x mysession.rd3x

Note: You'll need administrator rights to use FileEncrypt.exe.

Launch Sessions Your Way

You're not limited to clicking through menus-Reflection Desktop makes it easy to start your sessions from the command prompt. This can be especially handy for power users or to automate your workflow.

For example:

Attachmate.Emulation.Frame.exe -f "C:\\Path\\mysession.rd3x" -uimode browser -n
  • -f specifies the session file
  • -n skips the splash screen
  • -uimode sets your preferred interface

Fine-Tune How You Connect

Finally, Reflection Desktop lets you decide what should happen if your host connection drops. Want to reconnect automatically? Go back into Settings > Configure Connection Settings, and choose to auto-reconnect after a disconnect, or set your own preference.
