Environment
This article applies to all versions of Reflection X Advantage, which includes the features X Manager and X Manager for Domains.
Reflection X Advantage is bundled with Reflection Desktop for X, Reflection Desktop Pro, InfoConnect Desktop Pro for Unisys with X, and Visual Cobol v7.
Reflection X Advantage can be run on Windows and Linux.
Situation
X Manager and X Manager for Domains are X servers which are primarily used for displaying X clients running on remote servers. If there is much latency between the system running X Manager or X Manager for Domains and the servers running the X clients, the X client performance may be very slow, or the X client may fail to run.
Cause
X clients communicate with X Manager and X Manager for Domains using X11 protocol, which includes a lot of round-trip communications. This works well over networks with very little latency; however, performance degradation can be seen with as little as 10 ms of latency.
One way to check for latency is to use the ping command on the system running X Manager or X Manager for Domains. In the example below, the ping command shows latency of 51ms (see 'time='). Of note is that the amount of latency can vary, so running the ping test multiple times might be beneficial to establish a good understanding of the network performance.
Pinging <host ip> with 32 bytes of data:
Reply from <host ip>: bytes=32 time=51ms TTL=61
Resolution
Performance can be enhanced over latent connections by enabling a feature in X Manager and X Manager for Domains entitled Remote Session Service, in addition to running either Remote Session Services or a Reflection X Advantage Domain node on the X client host or another system in the same LAN as the X client host. In this scenario, the round-trip communications will occur in the LAN without latency.
