My name is Qiang Lin, Principal Software Engineer. In this session, I'm going to give you a tour of the architecture of UniVerse 12.1 with regards to the all-new Recoverable File System. We will detail all of the lessons learned from RFS over a 20-year history and how we re-architected the UniVerse database into a two-process architecture for better data integrity, reliability and performance. I just discovered (joyfully) that we could print and email (by way of Cups-PDF post processing options) any D3 report to a PDF file by defining a shared printer that outputs its contents through Cups-PDF (we use D3/Linux). The printer also respects the CUPS options passed to it (I have only tested -o landscape and -o cpi=17 so far).Coming out of this discovery, here is an initial list of wish I hads:The ability to directly mail the reports to the consumers rather than having to forward them from a single central mailbox.The ability to inject the title of the report into the PDF document and also name the resultant file for ease of identification.The ability to colorize elements of the report. I guess this would have to come from some DEVICE file definition.The ability to archive the reports based on title and date/time generated.Any help in respect of the above would be appreciated.Finally, is ROCKET planning to develop anything in this regard.Best regards and keep safe,Vin

#UniData #Windows#PrintingFor 32-Bit versions of UniData running on a 64-Bit version of Windows (i.e., prior to UniData 8) UDT.OPTIONS 116 was added to overcome a delay of around 60 seconds when executing the SETPTR with the DEST or AT options. The effect of turning UDT.OPTIONS 116 ON changes the user ID running the command to SYSTEM, as Spooler functions run faster as a SYSTEM user. After the spooler function completes, UniData switches back to the original user ID.UDT.OPTIONS 116 should not be needed for 64-Bit versions of UniData. If you were previously running 7.2 or 7.3 versions of UniData and have upgraded to 8.2 you may have UDT.OPTIONS 116 ON to avoid the problem. Until a recent round of Windows updates leaving UDT.OPTIONS 116 ON was not problematic on a 64-Bit version of UniData other than all the print jobs that were created would be owned by SYSTEM not by the user that created them.The following two articles discuss the change that Microsoft has made in the latest security p
Recently I had to get involved in a particularly challenging problem that started happening to a process that has been rock-solid for many years.Context: UV 11.2.5 on RHEL 7We have a process that performs numerous transaction-bracketed updates.It is capable of being run as a phantom.Under the right conditions the phantom process would just stop.We have a COMO recording active while the phantom process is running, but it captured nothing of any value.The last line in the COMO was always Message[001467] For those that are interested, this is an item in the SYS.MESSAGE file >CT SYS.MESSAGE 001467 001467 0001 Spooler Entry #%i 0002 > The program that is active at the time of the abort is performing BASIC WRITE to a file whilst an TRANSACTION is active.After using strace to monitor the phantom pid I came to understand that when the phantom would die it was after updating a cacheXXXXX file in the UVTEMP directory.These are dynamic files, and are used as disk overflow of the in-mem

Have the monitoring program use the unix 'fuser' command on each file it checks. If the command returns a PID, then another process (the copying process) still has the file open. We use the '-o' option, but we're running AIX so options might be a little different on Linux. Brian Paige
Automatic Data Encryption (ADE) is a largely-transparent database feature available in both UniData and UniVerse that helps prevent unauthorized access to selected sensitive data. This is accomplished by encrypting selected fields using an industry-standard security algorithm based upon OpenSSL and Encryption Keys, which are held separately to the data itself. In commercial terms, this can help serve business confidentiality needs and allow a positive separation permitted levels of access and user roles. At the same time the legal compliance requirements of industry regulatory compliance such as GDPR, HIPAA and PCI-DSS can be achieved by adopting ADE as a keystone part of a larger solutionMechanismsADE itself encrypts data at an individual field (i.e. attribute) level. If wished, different encryption and security/access criteria also can be applied to separate fields within a record. Is it possible to use virtual environments with Universe Python and if so, Are there any (or can one provide) instructions for doing so? Hi All, I am running D3 10.3.1.windows single user on an ASUS X555LAB Lpatop with CPU i5-5200U (2 core, hyperthreading) @ 2.20GHz (peaking 2.60GHz). running Windows 10 Home. The program I'm running takes 4 hours to run doing full processing to find the end point. When I swap subroutines to use a file which already has the end point pre-processed and do a simple compare, it's only 20 minutes faster. It actually took twice as long with the pre-processed compare until I changed the file to be more efficient. I have changed settings so that it's supposed to be able to use full CPU in all circumstances. (Advanced Power Options -> Processor Power Management -> Minimum or Maximum Power State = 100% for Battery & Plugged In). Task Manager no longer allows the changing of program priorities (as you were able to in Windows 7). My thought is that wither Windows 10 Home or the laptop is throttling D3 because when the program is running, it's using around 35% t
Could someone tell me what is the equivalent of Unidata @RM in Universe?
The XMAP and result below is from my UniVerse 11.3.1 AIX platform. They represent a simple object model containing two child tables with the same parent table. The data is from the HS.SALES sample/demo tables that come with UniVerse.Using the DB.TOXML command, also provided with UV, produces an XML file containing records from the parent table and related records from each child table. However, the fields for each record from one of the child tables are duplicated within each record node from that table. In fact, further analysis showed that the set of fields mapped for each child table will repeat count(TableMap)–1 times within each child record node in the output. This means that if there are three sibling tables defined under one parent, output for the child TableMap referenced first in the parent TABLECLASSMAP, will contain fields in triplicate; output for the child TableMap referenced second will contain fields in duplicate; and so on.This behavior was noticed during development o

I stumbled across this when digging into a transaction related issue.Knowing about this might help someone in the future.Context: UV 11.2.5 on RHEL7We had a phantom process that would die unexpectedly during processing.The phantom had an active COMO recording going at the time it died, but the COMO file did not capture the error message produced by the phantom.The only way I could track why the phantom process was aborting was to have the pid launch a unix strace in background that traces the pid of the phantom, and check the trace file output at the end.The strace output file did capture the phantom's error messageThe reason appears to be that the UV phantom's COMO is only capturing the standard output (stdout). The error messages produced by the uv phantom are still sent to standard error (stderr), and this is not included in the COMO recording.#como #strace #UniVerse #rhel------------------------------Gregor Scottgregors------------------------------

This section, is intended to provide you with more information on using the guide statistics so you can better manage your files. In future posts, we will go over some guidelines for determining resize values, and we will go over methods to determine sizing for future growth. Note that a poorly sized UniData file impacts performance, It is recommended that you routinely check the status of your UniData files to ensure they are still properly sized. The 'guide' command's -r option allows you to put the status and statistics about the file into a UniData file for easy query access.
