Problem:

Application hangs on any OPEN statement

Resolution:

Are the files being open on an NFS mounted disk? If so ensire that the NFS locking daemons are running - rpc.statd and rpc.lockd

Without the locking mechanism COBOL will not be able to OPEN a file.
